I plan to purchase an older d1 or range rover to use primarily off road. Any advice on which vehicle to go with?

The D1 will have a better departure angle and unless you're looking at a late 80's Rangie the D1 will have my vote because of the CDL.

Early US RRCs reached the $5k price range a couple of years ago ('87-'89ish), where early US Discos are just now getting to that range ('94-'95s are starting to get down there now, usually still closer to $8k or so). Until the Discos got close in price, it was favorable to go w/ the Rangies.

The Rangies often have the EAS, but that's easily replaced. They often have a lot of rust issues in the tailgates, though, and elsewhere. Since the Discos are newer than Rangies for the same price, they're usually not as "well-worn".

Both are comparable performancewise. Same wheelbase (non LWB RR, that is), similar drivetrain, etc. The Disco has a back-end that gets in the way, but the Rangie has it, too. Lots of Rangies have been bobtailed, but, you could do a Disco, too.

I'm not fond of the layout on Rangies.... sitting in one, I find my knees hit the rear-wiper switch, the radio gets coffee spilled in it, etc. I like the Disco better in that regard.

I used to not like Rangies at all, because of the perceived attitude I had of their owners, ie, too much money, snotty, etc.; being a Series owner, I was coming from a different angle into Rovers. When the Disco first came out, though, I didn't like it either, I thought it looked like a duck.

But, both won me over. Once you realize that yes, there may be pricks w/ Rangies, there are a LOT of mellow folks in them, too. And, even though I still think the Disco looks like a duck, its ability to be a family vehicle yet still get out and kick butt off road is what won me over.

IMHO, find the best vehicle for the money. Both are great off-road, both are easy enough to work on (later Rangies become MUCH more complex, tho'), both have personality.

IMHO, FWIW, YMMV.....

I didn't think the ass end of a D1 is as much of a problem as that of the Rangie. The Classic Rangie has an ass as big as a D2. The D1 saves about 6-8" over the D2.

Maybe not with the SWB ones, thought the LWB ones have both the back end and the wheelbase working against them (though I have to admit, a LWB has a nicer highway ride).....

I think it's that the Disco's bumper protrudes worse than the RRC bumper....

IMHO....

I'm not even thinking about the LWB. Wheel base being equal SWB RRC and Disco1, I would think the D1 has a better rear end off road. But slap an ARB rear bumper on the RRC and you can drag that thing over anything if you want.

I am looking at an '88 RRC, SWB, 150k miles, $G Sliders, OME lift, no rust, reported no leaks. Looking this weeekend. asking $4500?

The RRC I like that for mainly offroad and when people look and see a bashed up RRC they think what is that guy doing to that oh my god! I like that but you would want to upgrade the 10 spline axle to a bigger one like a SG 30 spline.

hmm,

at that age the prices vary tons because it's now getting hard to find a like new issue free 88 range rover, so i think the value is holding.

for that price i am expecting a cream puff.

as a owner of a 88 rover, i would say stay away from the 88's with a 3.5 engine......go with a 89 or later. the disco is nice but will be more money up front.
