Hi - I've been reading over the last couple months that there have been numerous people who have switched out the stereo headunit with an aftermarket one.

I called Crutchfield today and they said they do not make a kit so that a standard size headunit will fit? Where can I purchase the correct kit?
I want to put in an Alpine CDA-7894

Also, has anyone successfully installed the PAC SWI-V, which lets you continue to use the steering wheel stereo controls? I looked on their site and it looks pretty straight forward. Anyone know how easy/hard it was to install/program?

Thanks in advance,
Will

I thought the head unit was a standard DIN unit.

Will,
Do you have a DI or a DII? What year? this info might be helpfull. A DI is standard DIN the DII is a double or 1.5 DIN or some such....

D2 fit is a standard DIN, but the actual face is 1.5 DIN. If you order the spacer that comes with the premium HK stereo you can retain the "stock" look.

Will- Could you provide a link for the connector that you're describing? What aftermarket units will it work with?

But I think the PAC SWI-V is for Video via IR from the wheel. I've never installed one so I could be wrong.

Hey Will,

I just replaced my stock 2001 DII deck w/ an aftermarket (clarion AutoPC.) I mapped out all of the wire colors, and I can post them at some point this weekend. (My brother is getting married this weekend so I don't have much time right now.) I didn't clip my stock connector - I used wiretaps and tapped each stock wire with a ~4" section of the aftermarket installation wire and crimped a female blade connector on the free end of each. I crimped a male blade connector on each of the aftermarket wires and then just mated the connectors. So if I ever decide to put the stock radio back in, I just unplug the blades and plug the stock radio back in.

If you are just looking to put a CD changer and keep the steering wheel controls, I have one to sell. :) I had installed an alpine 6disk changer w/ a blitz converter, but I missed my AutoPC, so I yanked the alpine changer setup and installed the AutoPC. The changer setup is in great connection - only 1 yr old or so.

Take Care,
-Tommy

You want the SWI-X not the SWI-V. The SWI-X allows you to use just about any vehicles OEM stereo "remote" steering wheel/dash controls to operate just about any aftermarket head unit that can be operated via infrared remote control. The SWI-X has inputs that wire to your OEM buttons and has an infrared LED that you mount where it points at the stereo. Really easy to program and pretty easy to wire up. It learns the infrared signals from the remote that comes with your new head unit and then when you push the button on the steering wheel/dash the SWI-X duplicates the infrared signal to control the head unit.

They retail for about $80 but I will sell them to my fellow Discoweb'ers for $60 + freight. E-mail me if you need one or any other car audio components at [email protected]

The part number for the cover is FHY100290LNF. Should be around $11.00. Pricey for a piece of plastic, but still less expensive than a mounting kit.
