All,

1995 Discovery 1 V8i NAS. Got home last night and turned off the key before putting it in "Park". Now the thing will not start. The key does come out of the ignition easily and when in the ON position, I can go through all gears.

The battery has a charge, and the accessories all seem to be working fine. I have not had any starter / battery problems and cleaned the terminals today just to make sure I was getting a proper connection.

This happened to me a few days ago, and simply moving the shifter out of Park and through the gears seemed to remedy the situation.

Any thoughts here?

Brake light switch? Starter? Does the truck still think it's in gear and won't start out of the Park position?

email me with any ideas, and thanks in advance!

it's got to be a safety switch in the console that won't engage. It must think that it is in park. If it was my truck, i won't somewhat aggressively work the shifter back and forth to see if I could shake it loose....if not I would start troubleshooting under the console.

good luck

The dash lights up like Christmas, the fan (heater, etc.) blows and all looks normal. I've run through (not aggressively yet) the gears and not had any joy.

There is an electronic sound when I rotate the key into the momentary (ignition / on) position, but absolutely no cranking / mechanical action from the engine compartment. Might there be a fault code, and do I need to pry open the diagnostics box under the passenger seat if there was a code to read? The box seems quite securely closed and I don't see a readout on the exterior. I'll check the owner's manual for this.

Any other thoughts?

Okay, I had a minor breakthrough and want to get your thoughts.

I "vigorously" ran through the gears with my foot on the brake and got it to start on the first try. It ran smoothly and then I turned it off (actually in PARK this time).

Now it won't re-start, vigorous shifting or not. Very sad to-day.

In the time it took for me to write the post above, I went down to the truck again and it started fine.

I am sad, curious, and well, okay - I'm a man and I can admit it - just a bit scared of the Disco right about now.

Will this happen fifty miles out on the trail - or worse - with the [angry] missus and screaming kids in the parking lot at Safeway?

Please God, someone help me!

If you get it running, leave it in Neutral next time and use the handbrake.
Do your brake lights work when you press on the pedal?
IF not the brake light switch needs replacing
IF they work its time to pull the center console off and go digging and fixing interlocks etc....hell of a job so I gave it to my mechanic to do
Plan C call AAA and get it towed

Suffice to say that beating on it and running the shifter back and forth is not going to fix your issue. Sounds like it might be the "Prundle" switch or as some call it "Neutral safetey switch" You are gonna have to get a meter out and get to work if you wanna find out what it is...

Since my last post I've not been able to repeat the problem. I'm certain that the situation was a direct result of turning off the vehicle out of "PARK" (or neutral according to the manual). I will have to invest some time under the dash checking connections for sure - I don't want some dust to strand me in the middle of nowhere!

Thank you all for the assist!

Cheers,

Erik
