Alright, yes, I know, you guys have already said that my Disco I is possessed, yada-yada :-P Anyhow, it's starting to have problems again. Now when I try to start it up, it idles really rough, and there is a plume of smoke for a minute coming from the driver's side bank of cylinders (y-pipe?). The idle doesn't even out like it usually does, instead, it either keeps "roughing it" or stalls completely. God forbid I try to put it into gear! Then it ALWAYS stalls. When I try to restart, the engine sounds like its having major issues trying to turn over, almost like when the battery is dead (although I know mine isn't dead, i just replaced it a month ago). *SIGH* HELP ME EXORCISE MY DISCO!! PLEAASE!!

What year is your truck? Is the check engine light on? It could be the throttle position sensor

Not sure about a 94, I have a 96. My work shop manual is for 95 and on.
I don't want to lead you down the wrong path.

Hmmm...it's alright. I am actually leaning away for a possible TPS failure more towards something with the fuel filter/pump. I tried starting the Disco again, and when it wouldn't start, it would just try to crank, but not turn over, and when I stopped turning the key, the engine would just "whirr" to a stop. When the engine did start, however, it idled normally (a tad rough) but then started to die out progressively. I managed to move the rig by setting the idle speed to 1500 to keep it from dying when stopped. Anything lower would cause the engine to die again. So, how do I check fuel pressure? There's a little adapter on the fuel rail where I can plug in a fuel pressure gauge, right? And for those in the states, doesn't AutoZone or PepBoys lend those? Thanks in advance!

You should get 30 psi at idle, with 37 if you pull the vacuum line from regulator to rear of plenum. If you dont get these, and hold them when revved, change the filter- if that doesnt help, do the pump, or find a problem in the lines.

Do what jp said, but also check for water in the gas. Also try starting it without the gas cap on too. If you get alot of hiss when opening your gas cap, it means there's a large vacuum in your tank, which means the fuel pump has to work extra hard to pump the gas. If it's weak, or you need a new filter, it may not pump it at all.
