Here's one for you all. After putting 265/75 on steele spare rims I had to set my steering stops out to keep the tyres from rubbing on the trailing arms. Of course I lost lots of turning radius...all this I knew before I put the tyres on but I was satisfied with the consequences. Wich leads me to my question.

After much intelectual conversation and a couple of beers the topic of turning radius came up...and how to solve the problem. Offset rims, yes that would work....= $ though. Of course rim spacers would work too..again $. So I'm talking...and half kidding but, hhhmmm.....why don't I turn the rims inside out? So tonight i tried it out just to see if they would clear the brakes and they did. Only problems I could see are the counter sink for the lug nuts and the valve stems are now on the inside of the wheels and I will have to crawl under the truck to air up and down but other than that I can't figure why it wouldn't work. Too simple? Plus it created a nice wide stance. I din't have the balls to put them all inside out and go driving though. I might try it just to see how it will drive. Who's got the pros and cons to this idea?

Didn't you rub on the inside lip of the wheel well when articulated or turned? Not to mention you'll look like you scored 50 on your last IQ test.

Just for giggles if you do reverse all four post a picture for us.

I think the countersunk holes for the wheel studs will be you biggest issue. On some vehicles they bear all the load of the vehicle. On others they just clamp the rim to the hub and the center hole on the rim fits snug over the hub so it carries the load instead. However, in both cases the lugs need to be very secure to hold the rim on flat and not have it come loose. I'd just get offset rims.

I have to agree on the counter sink lug holes. Those counter sinks use the corresponding taper on the lugs to locate the wheel in the exact center of the rotating axis. You'll run the risk of the wheel running out of round on the axle and create nasty vibrations, and eventally after enought time may damage your wheel bearings.

And I thought I was a genius for putting my underwear on inside out to get another day out of them... However if you find or make conical washers, like if you cut the beveled end off a lug nut, you could put them on the stud first to center the wheel and fit the countersink properly. The thicker the washer, the farther out the rim would be on the studs, weakening them. Be CAREFUL ! This could also put your white letters out !!

Paul,

Luckily.....the white letters are already out....this would fix that problem. I had no idea how bad white letters out were untill I started reading all these posts. The sham has keept me from posting any pics. I don't think I will really try this inside out wheel thing but the idea is very entertaining.
