Hello....It appears that my 95 disc. automatic is stuck in low transfer gear. I got it recently and the prev. owner claims not to have used it....I am able to move the stick from diff-lock off to on positions....the dash shows that....But while I was trying a few days ago to get it to H or L it must have shifted and someone at a bulletin board suggested that I am stuck in L gear. The dash doenot display H or L...I cant make more than 35 mph and the 4 speed shifts too quickly... I also observed that the transfer stic. is rotated by 180 degrees....The transmission was changed late last year and the dealor must have put it other way round. Can someone tell me how to put it correctly....I already tried moving at 5 mph in neutral and diff-lock off , nudging the stic....it Doesnt want to move forward or backward....Sprayed Wd-40 to the linkage underneath.... Thankx!! |

I just replaced the transmission on a 94 discovery (manual). All the linkage is located under the center console. Strip out the console and access the transmission and high low linkage from above. You will have to drill some rivets out to remove the rubber seal so you can access. Once you can see the linkage, hopefully you will see the problem. After I replaced my transmission I had a problem with the linkage catching on a nut on top of the t/case. (This stopped me from selecting diff-lock). I am guessing that you have a similar problem with the linkage down there. It is real obvious what is going on once you can see the lever set up on top of the transmission and t/case. Any questions give me a shout. Good luck. |

Thanks for the inputs....I finally freed the lever with lots of WD-40....It was moving way too freely and I went under the chassis and found the other end disconnected from the transfer gear lever....Fortunately the pin was still dangling at the end of the connecting lever....I had two options..one to rip the console or manage under the vehicle to reinsert the connector & pin....I had to move the transfer stic and keep some dead weight till I got the end of the connector rod to align with transfer case lever hole...(An extra hand would have helped moving the lever) My long hand came to the rescue trying to align these parts....I brought some 15c circlips that I wanted to insert but there was absolutely no room to position it....In the process I found the old rectangular clip lying on top of transfer case and using some loctite to keep the pin in pos. I was able to somehow push the clip....I know it is barely missing a bolt head.... I was able to move the lever from H to L....I am still unable to do that by engaging diff-lock first...I can engage it first and then move the lever left for diff-lock. Thanks folks for all the help!!! |

you cannot shift from high-lock directly to low-lock. You must be in high-unlocked (bottom right), then go through nuetral (shift up halfway) into low-unlocked (top right). Do you see what I mean? You cannot shift directly up from "bottom left" to "top left". |

I was wrong - you can shift from high-lock through neutral to low-lock. Tested it out last night. I replaced my center console so I don't have the shematic directions behind the shifter, and I always assumed you had to go unlocked to unlocked... |

Thanks Bluegill....I just remembered I had come across this one sometime in the last few days....An excellent description for changing....After half an hour search I found it again....Please check www.disco2.com under HOWTO section on How do I use Transfer gear lever. He has provided graphs on speed overlaps of Hi and Lo gears that gives good info....Be careful on shifting from Hi to Lo ....got to be in N () and speed of 5 mph. Lo to high seems to be OK and you have worry only about transfer gear shift. |
