I've suffered a failure of the rearmost bearing in my power steering pump. Anybody have an idea of what the bearing number is? I'm foolish enough to think I can open it up and slap a new bearing on the end of the shaft, but wish to know the identity of the bearing before I tear it apart.

Oh yeah, this bearing failure was the cause of my horrible whistling noise!

Left a related question on your other thread regarding the engine whistle, I'll be following both threads now to get the low down in this repair.

That's not what I needed to hear! If I had the hoses made up and the right pulley, I'd be done with it. I do have good news on the bearings, they are priced at the whopping amount of $8-10 each!

Yee ha! Found a replacement used pump and new bearings. Should have one or both by the end of the week.

Funny, but everybody says these pumps aren't serviceable, but the parts are fairly easily obtainable and inexpensive. Another example of the Rover parts mafia trying to keep prices up by discouraging us from working on them?

The prices of the pumps varied all over. I was really surprised at the variation in pricing.

The tech sheet faxed me by my bearing supplier even listed ZF as the customer for whom the bearings were made.

Paul the main reason as told to me by Meridian is when it is being pressure tested it fails more times than it passes and the warranty was getting to costly for a good profit margin. Also the 100% warm fuzzy they like to have on all there remans was not there with the LR Steering pump's.

How the new digs comming along, drop me a line

Ron:
As soon as I get the O-rings and bearings together, I'll have a kit on the "For Sale" board.

My supplier is still trying to figure out why everybody seems to think these can't be rebuilt.

Also, the hoses for the Saginaw retro-fit should be done tomorrow, and the bracketry is coming along very well also.

I hope to have braided steel hoses for the ZF pump that is to be delivered tomorrow, also!

I have quickly progressed from a whistling, soon-to-fail pump, to a functioning ZF pump and a really good start to finally mounting the Saginaw pump.

Pictures at 11:00.

Paul
