This much I know: CDL = Central Diff Lock

Can someone explain what it is and why I need one? I have a '99 D2, does it have the CDL already? If I understand what I've read, I have to install a shifter and solenoid if I wanted to use it?

Sorry to be such a dummy on this, but we all had to start somewhere.

It's not too difficult to install on your 99 D2. It took me an afternoon. Check the CDL installs in the Tech section here. How long it takes you depends on your version of the CDL install.

You need one because it's really the best upgrade you can make to your D2 hands down. What a CDL is for is to make sure you have power going to both front and rear axle (50/50) when the Center Diff is locked. With an open center diff you run the risk of all your power going to one wheel only. The ETC will help but it can't replace the CDL. The ETC have an easier time and your tires will spin less with the CDL.

I would recommend that you read the information at the following URL.

www.expeditionexchange.com/cdl/

If you decide to do it I have a DI CDL setup for sale in the for sale section here.

Thanks Dave, that explains alot of the installation of the D1 shifter. I also see alot of talk about the solenoid installation. Is this basically an electrical method of what the D1 linkage does?
