AAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHH !!!!!!!!!! I just bought this thing!

I'm sitting in a parking lot talking to a guy, and jump out of my "new" 98 Disco to shake hands with his passenger (she was cute, I couldn't help it). Upon jumping back in the vehicle, I absent mindingly twist the key... Of course the thing was already running :)

It was only half a second! I didn't think about it, until minutes after getting home I realized a programmers worst nightmare, I was out of cigarettes. I jump back into the truck, and knowing the engine was now fully stopped, I turned the key. My only answer was a rather sad nothing.

Not really thinking such a minor thing would kill something as sturdy as my new Disco I immediatly set about determining the problem. I hooked up the old meter, and seemed to have plenty of voltage, it didn't even drop when I hit the switch. The headlights didn't even dim. Thinking my alarm had shut me out I even tried arming/disarming several times. I finally heard a slight "thunk" from under the engine when twisting the key, and I realized that I must have killed my starter.

Is there anything simple to check? Is there an inspection cover where I can see if I've just twisted a brush out of place? Is there anything I can do short of spending more on a starter than a Ford guy ever thought one could cost?

As an aside, you could always tell when the Mustang GT was running, you could feel it in your "arse" as my new british money pit would say.

Scott

Try jabbing the starter with hmmer/mallet. The unit may be jammed in place. This shouldnt happen to a good starer but you got to try evrything.

I believe there is a starter on eBay now.

Mine failed supposedly due to excessive oil leakage on it-according to the dealership. Trust me, this is an expensive proposition if the dealer gets involved.

Yes, I balked very loudly over the comment that oil leaking killed my cranking motor-oil leaks causing a critical component failure on a Rover?

Yeah, Right!

After spending some time under the truck today, and suffering a rather painful spider bite, I determined that my starter is actually not ruined!

The short conductor that goes from the solenoid to the positive terminal on the side of the starter motor has corroded away completely. Maybe my earlier goof was enough to jar it loose, or running the starter for a short period of time as a generator generated too much heat :)

Anybody have ideas on what to replace this conductor with? I used half of a jumper cable to start the thing directly with the terminal, and I hate to replace a good starter, especially at these prices.
