Seems to happen once the brakes have heated after 5 - 10 minutes of driving, constant squeak that's so loud that even though my wife and I prefer to drive windows down it's the most unpleasant experience to do so. If anyone has a thought, or solution, please let me know. |

Now, when you say "constant" do you mean the squeak is present when brakes are applied as well as when released? If the squeak is truly constant than I'd check the rear wheel bearings (some may prefer to call them axle bearings). My money is on the bearings-not the brakes. Bearings are a snap to replace, it's a good design, don't even have to remove the brakes to do it. Good luck |

Sorry, I tried to be cheeky in the above post but inflection is lost in type. Bearing replacement is pretty straight-forward but (obviously) rotors will have to come off. |

Does this occur when you are on or off the brakes? What speeds? Matt |

Not sure if you've been off-roading or on a gravel road, but often I pick up rocks between my pads and rotors. To free them, I roll backwards and tap the brakes abruptly... if it is indeed a rock, it usually pops out after one or two takes. Rich |

I have a 97 Disco as well and have the same damn problem for about 70K miles. I have had the rotors replaced figuring that would fix the problem -- but it didn't. I have had the dealer look at this problem while it was under warranty many times. They really found no issue -- occasionally I will have them tighten the right rear brake's backing plate and sometimes bend something (not sure what). That seems to fix the problem for about 3K miles but it returns with a vengeance. The squeaking in my case stops as soon as I touch the brakes -- so I do not believe it is a bearing problem. The dealer examined the bearings and repacked them at least once in their efforts to diagnose and correct the problem. The current solution for me is to turn the radio volume up. Bryan |
