I want to buy a new set of steel wheels for my '96 Discovery. I was planning on buying the American Racing Rims, but after reading some of the other threads, I am doubting that choice. I would like to find rims that are about 8" wide and that will give me an offset that will allow for a better turning radius than the stock alloys. Please let me know what your suggestions would be an why. I am planning on running 32"X10.5" or 11.5". Thanks in advance for your thoughts

genuine disco steel, run spacers under them if you need offset. Why? because they're the best there is, and genuine too.

I do not want to run spacers because of $$. I want to find aftermarket steel rims with the offset (I guess it is less offset) built in. I am not worried about genuine, mainly $$ and function. Will I get all of this with the American Racing wheels?

I have the American Racing steelies on my D1 Disco. They are very strong (about as thick as the stock Disco steel wheels). The offset is better for running slightly wider tires (4.25 AR versus 5.25 on the stock wheels). I've had them for over a year and no problems. I go off-roading quite a bit. This is probably the most commonly used after market steel wheel for D1 discos there is. The quality is not great, but it is certainly good enough to do the job! Also, they are cheap enough that you don't have to worry about tearing one up.

Thanks,
Mike B.

If you want some good quality steel rims, talk to Dee or Nathan regarding the beadlocks they sell. 7" is perfect width for 10.50 or 11.50 tires, so unless you plan on going to 12.50's or wider, I would not bother with an 8".

so now the questions arises...where is the best (in this case cheapest) place to get LR genuine steelies?

I don't have a D1 (it's a D2) but I thought the NATO wheels were cheaper and stronger than the AR and OE LR steel wheels for the D1.

Jess - e-mail me off-line. I can give you the details where I am picking mine up. If the guy I am working with has more available he may be able to get you some as well.

Jess, try the classifieds here on dweb for genuine steel.

that mud pie was from that bull with the big cajones or from one of his ladies....it's always an odd weekend when Crown King, AZ is involved...someday I'll tell you about the fat lesbians getting busy with a fly swatter in one of the two Crown King bars while "the rubber band" butchered Jimi Hendrix....

The American Racing Rover steel wheels are not listed on the American Racing site. They are considered a special item if I recall.

If you are looking for steel wheels (NATO or Mixedother) I HIGHLY recommend talking to this gentleman.

Ben Freeman - [email protected]

I just e-mailed him to check availability and he gave me the OK to throw his name on the board.

I've ordered five NATO steel wheels for $320 and a bag of 20 lugs for $15 (prices can vary - e-mail him for details). I have not found a better deal. He is in the Seattle area so those outside of driving distance would have to plan on shipping (and they are heavy).

If you contact him tell him that Todd sent you.

FWIW Nato wheels aren't any stronger than American Racing Rims. I have seen Nato rims bend to point where the bead broke on the tire. I have not seen this with American Racing. I'm sure it has happened though. My point is that American Racing should suit your need just fine. My thoughts on Spacers are this: The less parts to break, the better. Spacers are generally thought of as a no-no in many other automotive applications. Generally 4-wheeling will put more stress on spacers than any other automotive application would.

I am on my 2nd set of American Racing wheels (needed to go from 16" to 15" for my tire selection) and I put as much stress on my truck as anyone else on this board.

You know which wheel you want, just go out and buy them.

Just do it!

NATOs not stronger? i have looked closely at both. NATO's are significantly thicker. that eludes me to think stronger. guess i could be wrong.
never been impressed with AR. had them on a j**p back in the day and they rusted to shit.

Nope.

I've got Webster's open right here...

e·lude

1.To evade or escape from, as by daring, cleverness, or skill: The suspect continues to elude the police.
2.To escape the understanding or grasp of: a name that has always eluded me; a metaphor that eluded them.

al·lude

To refer to something indirectly or by suggestion; to have reference to a subject not specifically and plainly mentioned; -- followed by to; as, the story alludes to a recent transaction.

The wave quote was:
Inigo Montoya saying "You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means."
