Are these actually needed? I've never crossed water that is higher than my tires and was curious about the tubes.

Ummm - just because you haven't crossed water deeper doesn't mean other haven't/don't :)

First time you suck a bunch of water into the diff or tcase or transmission is something to be avoided - especially for the low cost involved in extending breathers.

Where can I purchase these? I would fabricate but time and laziness wins every time.

The rear (D2) is especially vunerable. Every trip I've been with water contaminated my rear diff until I extended it.

Jack - you can extend or remake from scratch with 1/4" nylon air brake tubing (Napa). It is quote easy to remake the diff breathers using the factory fitting and the trans and tcase can be done easliy by extension (use union fittings to attach factory tube to new tube)

If you have a snorkel - that's the best place to run them all. If not - run them all as high as you can get.

Also - if you insist on buying - GCR has a kit.

Atlantic British is where I got mine.
www.atlanticbritish.com
$39.95 + shipping

Remember that the fitting is metric if you go for a replacement at your hardware/plumbing supplier.

Splicing an extension to the existing tubing may be a good idea... if the union supplies enough "breathing" and doesn't narrow and or restrict flow.

LRNA is now extending the rear breather on D2's at the owners request.

FWIW, I picked up my extensions from Rover Accessories.

I tried AB and they were out or at least that is what the salesman told me. I've looked at RoverAccessories but I believe that I've seen them cheaper. Any other vendors that would supply them? I've checked every damned bookmark I have but don't see any.
Thanks all.
Cheers

The one from Rover Accessories is a kit with front and rear axle extension and tranmission breather extension if I recall. If you need just the rear extended ask your local LR shop to do it (no charge for D2's I think) next time you take it in.

I would try the dealer if I had a D2. It's hard enough to get an oil change out of them when I pay let alone free!
Thanks

Jack - as mentioned above - did you call GCR?

The transmission breather on the D2 is located in the back of the engine bay at the top near the firewall. Look to the right of the fuel cutoff switch. There should be the breather for your front axle and the transmission.

If the breather on the front axle (I haven't looked at the rear, I just happened to notice the front last time I was down there.) does not already have an extender on it, then what is that tube/whatever that is coming down from the center of the truck to the breather? When I saw it I thought that it must be an extended breather. I will investigate more closely today after work. But could I be wrong? What is that?

Trevor, I have a D1 as well as several others within our local LR group. From one D1 to another, the stock breathers are set-up differently, why who knows. Anyway, crawl underneath the hood and look close and if you can't find them, get underneath the truck and start tracing. Stock for mine was placed on firewall in engine bay, but I extended my axles tubes to the same area. 30 minute job and I am slow moving.

D1:
Rear axle - loops up to passenger side above front of A arm

Front axle - loops up to inside of drivers side wheel well

Tcase - loops up behinf engine - center at firewall

Trans - same as Tcase (usually clamped together)
