My 95 d1 with 98k on it overheats under load. It boils out at the expansion tank cap, after a flush and fill and new t-stat, I think my only choice is the radiator needs work. What should I do, is rodding the best first step? I have read where people end up recoreing it anyway. Should I just get a new radiator, or rebuilt one and call it done? Or just get the radiator recored? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks Andy |

many people will argue this point, but in the end the best, one time, end all cures for a bad radiator is to replace it with a new one.... call nathan at discount rovers.com he has the lowest prices. mike w |

Not knocking your advice MK but those dam raditors dont ship to well from the UK most are very dammaged and last I herd nathan was not doing them because of that i wont either. If you in a larger city and can find a good raditor shop id go with a recore if the shop will provide a 1 year warranty. Also some off road shops can make you a kick ass Alum raditor for less than a stocker will cost. About rodding if no leaks are found and its done right that should be all that it needs. Most that have problems rodding is when leaks are found and the tubes are pluged. that will kill the performance |

dee is soooo correct, when i bought my rediator from nathan i experenced some bent metal, it was the mounts and not the core itself so it was a matter of carefully bending a few pieces back into what was the right place. also Dee hit the reason i have avoided rodding a radiator and thats when the discover a bad radiator tube thay plug it and in doing so reduce the water flow thru the heat exchanger. now that in itself isnt bad until you plug alot of them up (the amount of plugged tubes needed to destroy the efficiency of the radiator is not known to me). so that is why i recommend ALWAYS replacing clogged radiators with new ones, you remove the possiblity of having you radiators cooling capacity reduced. this lack of cooling may not manifest itself during the day to day commute, but will probably show up on your next outing to the middle of nowhere and thats not what you would want. as far as nathan not shipping them, damn i should have bought two when i had the chance! mike w |

Any suggestions on replacement? Where should I get one? How about that idea of a shop built or universal one? Or should I stay with the genunine LR one? |

Andy: I am the reason that Nathan won't ship radiators! Between the difficulty of getting a good one to you and then shipping the beat up ones back, it was too much hassle for both of us. It is yet another testament to what a good guy he is that he put up with me on this. It took me five tries to get a radiator successfully shipped to me from three different vendors and two different hauling firms. I finally got a good one from a company in Houston-I think it was BritishParts.com contact Eric and tell him Paul Schram at BTL Engineering sent you. He made me a pretty good deal, but again, it took two tries to get one shipped in. I too considered recoring and called my local radiator shop. They wanted seven dollars more than a new one to recore! When I balked, they got nasty and told me they could get me a new one for $900. When I told them they were full of shit, they got even nastier! Be careful with your radiator shops. I find that the good old boy with the dirty shop will give you the best deal, but you may have to take your radiator to him to have him meaure the core. If you are going to have one made up, have them add at least another row of tubes. The Discos originally came with four row radiators, but the current replacements are only three. The tanks have room for up to five or six, depending upon the configuration. Now that I said that, I'm pleased to report that my new three core radiator keeps my engine far cooler than the clogged four-row ever did. Paul |
