Any ideas? The wife gets in the Rover and turns the key and she says it cranks but never catches. She goes back a few minutes later and it starts just fine?

It has done this to her a few times. It has never happened to me yet.

I have heard somewhere that LR had a bulletin on hard starting involving the oil viscosity, which sounds like BS to me, but if so what was it?

Any other ideas?

You are right, Spark not igniting fuel (or no fuel for spark to ignite) should not be affected by oil viscosity. If you drained all of your oil out your engine would still run (assuming no fail-safe systems setup for low oil levels....now that would be a whole new bag of worms...)

Weird.

Has anyone replaced the starter on a d1. Looking in the service manual it indicates that the heat sheild also has some type of emmisions sensor in it. Access to the lower bolt seems easy enough but I have not figured how to get to the top bolt yet. Any ideas?

I've had issues with mine with starting. Sometimes when I lock the vehicle, the ignition kill switch sometimes does not re-engage when I unlock the vehicle. When I try to start it then, it simply turns over and over and over. I'll lock and unlock again, and then it works. I think its a Lucas gremlin.

Cranks but never catches? Have you cleaned the Idle Air control module? There is a how to in the tech section here at discoweb. Could be gunked up. Also, turn the ignition switch to on, listen for the fuel pump, if it runs for a long time, it could be losing fuel pressure due to leaky injector.
