i never owned a landrover. i found a disco sd, 1999 w/ 30k miles and i really like it. i must decide between it and the toyota 4-runner. i will commute to work 40 miles per day and use it for duckhunting (muddy areas and frozen boat ramps) on weekends.
i want the rover but i'm not a do it yourself mechanic. how much will i hafta spend per year and how reliable can i expect a 1999 disco to be?
i visited other general auto webs where discovery owners always seem to have problems. the same site in the toyota 4-runner forum has nothing but praise for their vehicle. HELP!

Reliability and inexpensive maintainance are not the forte of the land rover discovery.

Only the true believers can tolerate ownership.

With care a Land Rover will rarely leave you stranded, however, they are expensive to maintain. Say at least 2-3k a year/12k miles once it is out of waranty if you do not DIY services and brakes.

so if you have to ask, just read the archieves.

Mark,

my single observation - one day, I've been wheeling with a guy in a 4Runner. I've tried to climb some sandy/rocky wash bank, and failed. He tried, too, and failed, too.

I drove away unharmed, he couldn't get his front
end straight since.

I've had my Disco a year and 4 months now. I camp, pull a boat, a camper, and off road moderately about 2 times a month. Other than the $300.00 spent on the 100K service. I have spent $110.00 and about 3 hours of my own time on fixing minor problems.

Toyota = good (but EVERYBODY has a 4Runner)
Disco = good, not AS reliable, but good.

Toyota = 3000k oil change and forget it.
Disco = Proactive ownership in every sense of the word! Lots of fun!

IMHO,
Own 84 Toy 4X4 xcab pick up since new over 250K on the clock, also own 89 Toy FJ62 since new 166K on the clock, own 99 LR D2 since new 37K on clock...most problems, maintenance, costly yada yada yada LR beats em both combined. Fool that I am I still like it....I think I'll take the blue pill now

thanks for the prompt replys. i don't have the time nor inclination to put up with the upkeep. hafta keep after 3 boys, gun dog, duck boat and fishing boat. alas i will hafta succumb to the mediocre styling but bulletproof (read idiot proof) 4runner
