Being new to Discovery and to a Diesel engine I think that there is a faulty/blocked injector, but before blundering in I'd like some advice from someone a bit more experienced.

Vehicle: 300TDi '95 Auto

Symptoms:

1) All of a sudden (was OK when I started my journey) a lot of vibration from the engine. This is worst about 60 mph just after 4th gear has engaged, and at idle.

2) very (very) slow from a standing start and a lot less power going up hill (had to use the low ratio gearbox to get up the steep road to my house).

3)A fair bit of extra smoke from the exhaust.

Does this ring any bells with anyone.

Any help much appreciated

Nick

Nick...Timing belt would be well worth your while checking. Timing can go out if the belt looses a tooth....you might want to have it towed to the garage rather than risk the engine

Hopefully not timing belt - it was changed only 1 month ago

PS forgot to mention it's black smoke, also tried a cold start and started first time and straight away

Nick,
vibration at idle makes testing of injectors easy. Slacken the nut of the injection pipe on top of on injector at the time (preventing twisting of the injector with a spanner) until diesel fuel emerges from that point. If it does and the engine runs worse or dies then this injector was allright. If nothing changes that cutting it off from fuel supply cannot make anything worse than before and therefore the engine will not run noticably worse.

h,

Thanks for the info,

I got the same info from elsewhere, and found the number 1 (nearest bulkhead) cylinder is the problem. It was also a bit of a Red Herring about the black smoke, as it turns out that was just the first time after starting from cold. Subsequent revs gives a dark grey smoke which quickly turns white.

Current thinking is that it's the head gasket.

that is cylinder number 4. They are counted from front to rear. Would not be too uncommon if the gasket blew in that area. Seems like thermic stresses are tiny bit bigger there.

What milage is your truck ?

It turns out it was a broken rocker arm
