Anyone changed their TDi timing belt? The repair guide states that before removing the timing cover the pulley block needs to be removed [& replacement]. A Landrover mechanics advises that its almost impossible to remove. Hoping for your advice, plus any other hints. |

We have done a 92 200tdi and the lower pulley(we call them harmonic balancer) is LOCTITE on.some gentle heat was needed and the same one was put back on with loctite.timing is a bit trickey .we didnt have the fancy special tools and you have to rotate the motor after setting up belt to check settings.next time I think I will leave it up to the experts(?). have fun |

I've also just done mine on a 200 Tdi. The 300 Tdi is an easier job than a 200 Tdi. See if your local dealer will loan the tool to remove the harmonic balance/pulleys maybe with a deposit or buy a suitable puller from an auto accessories store. Put the bolt back in the end of the crank to undo against or you might wreck the end of the crank. To undo the crank bolt on a 300 tdi put the car in gear/low range and chock the wheels. The tension isn't that high so it should undo without special tools. After replacing the belt rotate engine two complete rotations to check all timing marks. If you follow the manual the job is easy and not as hard as others make it out to be. John D PS: you don't need to replace the pully block and I would remove the radiator for extra work space. |
