96' Disco. The rubber/molding around the rear window and rear quarter window are cracking. Has anyone replaced the molding themselves or should I take it to a "glass" shop?

Get the new moulding from sources like Nathan @ Discount Rovers then take it into the shop. I did all mine last year. you will save more than enough to cover the labor. Most glass shops will call the local Dealer to get the parts...

I used black Silicone gasket maker. I squirted some under the molding and some on top over the cracks. Then I wiped it with a wet finger to make it smooth. It looks great and cost about $4. Its held up for over a year w/o an problem.
The only person that will notice is the person that you took the fingure off of.
Give it a try and if you don't think it looks good enough then by a new molding.

I second Rico's solution. I had several very wide cracks and when I looked at Rico's molding, I noticed nothing until he pointed it out. Sure beats replacing the entire seal just becuase the thin portion has dried up. Give it a try and you will be happy with the results.

Well guys,
I replaced all mine about 6 months ago, and they are already showing signs of cracking again. They just use crappy rubber. If I had it to do over again (and I apparently will) I would just go the silicone route.

Hmm... where are all you guys from? I'm thinking the cracking weatherstripping is a climate related thing. My '96 is suffering from this malady, while my cousin's '96 still has perfect weatherstripping... at least while it was still with us. R.I.P. I live in Raleigh (relatively hot) while he spent most of his time in Boone, NC (definitely not hot). Just a curiosity.

Later on,

I have not replaced mine, I used black silicone. I taped off the window and the painted area around the cracks. Then I sort of paisted and smoothed over the cracks with the silicone. I then wiped off the extra. It sorta sank into the cracks, but it worked perfectly. You wouldn't even notice it if you were walking buy. And, if you mess up you really can just pull it off and re-apply.
