Well, after installing my RTE sliders, and all the "coaxing" from Paul, Greg, and Todd, I'm considering getting some taller springs and longer travel shocks for my D1. I'm thinking of getting RTE's 1" springs. Now, if i go with these, will I have to replace my rotoflex? And, what is the biggest tire i can get under there without trimming my fenders. I DO NOT want to do that. I don't mind installing the Z clips and pushing the fender out though.

Thanks.

And this stuff is dangerously addictive!!!!

Zak:
With a 1" lift, you'll not need longer travel shocks. Replace Rotoflex? With a new one, or remove and replace with Universal shaft? Again, with only 1" of lift, you shouldn't place too much additional stress on the Roto. Many of us are running lifts larger than 1" and still using the roto.

Again, with only 1" of lift, you might not be able to go much larger on your tires without trimming.

Are you sure you only want 1" of lift? What is it that you really want to do with the vehicle? If you want the bigger tires, go with the 2" lift, trim your fenders and get a set of 235/85-16s! You can retain your shocks and your brake lines.

My main reason for the little lift is to get slightly larger tires on it, and to get some heavier duty springs. I'm starting to go off road more, and would like to have larger tires/mud tires on there. I'm going to get a second set of rims, and put on some all out off road tires. I really don't want t otrim teh fenders, so I was thinking of putting 245/75 16's on there. I know, not much of a difference, but anything helps.

i don't want hte 2" lift for a few reasons. One is the additional stress of the lift on the driveline, and having to possibly upgrade more items underneath. My second reason, and go ahead, say all the nasty PWhip stuff again, is that my wife and I share our cars, and she I a bit on the short side, and would have a tough time getting into the rig. Although over the weekend I had her get into Paul Morgan's 2" lift with larger tires truck, and she got in Ok.

I'd like to try to get about 2" lift with tires and springs. Thanks for the advise.

Why not look into the OME lift? It's only really about a 1.5" lift anyway. With the OME and 245/75/16 tires, its still a managable step-in height. An additional 1/2" isn't going to hurt. There usually isn't any driveline problems with the OME lift.

You'll just be kicking yourself later if you get the 1" lift.

Zak,

You don't even need a lift at for for 245/75R16 tires, but even with a lift, you'll need to do a bit of trimming anyway (or, see Kyle's flipping-the-bracket idea in the tech-section).

I put 245/75s on the other Disco I had, and the LITTLE trimming was unnoticable unless pointed out to someone.

stock '99 D1 w/ 245/75R16

(We were only using the forklift to generate stuffage to make sure that we had trimmed enough.)

I just got off the phone with John at RTE, and he, and you guys, have talked me into the 2" springs. Now i have to decide between the RTE's or the OME's. They are the same price. Will I have to replace my shocks with them, or can i wait?

Thanks for pics again Greg!!

You don't have to replace your shocks when you swap springs, but, eventually you'll go back in and swap them, so you'll save yourself some time if you swap shocks now instead of later.

RTE's buddy. RTE's all the way.

You can run the OME shocks with the 2" RTE's if you want.

And, regarding the pics, I was just trying to give you some girly man encouragement pwhip boy. :)

Leslie:

I used a similar method to check stuffage clearance. I put each front tire up on a rock seperately to check rear tire clearance.

When I first checked the clearance (OME HD lift, 235/85, rear fenders out about 3/4") I had about 3/4" clearance at full drop on the other rear tire. I thought everything would be fine. However, when flexing offroad in a cross-axled situation, the tire was rubbing the body.

A better test would be to use two forklifts to check it out.

True, two would be better.... trimmed enough that I never had a problem, tho'....

235/85, given the extra height, would have more problems when fully cross-axled, though.... the 245/75 isn't quite as tall, albeit a tad wider... I think it would have seen any problems a bit earlier given the width. (I *think*!)

Go with the Rovertym springs. If you really want to get the most bang for the buck pick up some lockers from him too. He does have prices that are hard to beat.

I really like Johns stuff at RTE, so I'll probably go with his 2" hd springs. Greg is driving down there the 28th, so if i can sell some stuff, I'll get them.

Ok, now you guys have done it. I'm thinking up some scenarios on how I can get these springs. Anyone want me stock one?? They are in good shape. The rears are almost brand new! Less than 2K miles on them....

I know someone who might want your stock sprigns. He's got an 87 rangie with a blown leveler. I figure Disco springs would work well for him.
What do ya want for them?
