My alternator developed a bit of a squeak and I pulled it of to take care of it. While I was removing it I noticed a crack on one of the three supports for the output shaft on the alternator. Once I got it all the way off I saw that the crack went all the way through. Yipes. That would be a nice failure...esp. with the serpentine belt. The alt is 14 months old...rebuilt. It would seem the casting just reached its fatigue limit after being a 'core' a few times. Something to think about when buying a rebuilt part...how many miles are on the 'core'? I had never really thought about it before but will now! I called the rebuilder directly after the retards at kragen didn't know what to do about it and they (Hi-test www.hi-test.com) told me that they would replace it even though its one year warrantee was up. Cool if they do, I wont know until I go drop it off tomorrow. Luckily for me they are only about 30 minutes away. Anyway, just a FYI type of thing. |

Good luck with Kragen, If they dont replace it an option for you is to find a core of the same alternator and swap the housings, Its not a hard repair. If you dont have an impact wrench, Kragen should have one to loosen the nut on the pulley. Dee |
