can get my existing belt on and off with no troubles, the new belt just won't go even though the adjuster is loosened all the way up. is there some sort of secret for getting a new belt on? |

Not really a secret, it's just that a new belt is really snug. I found that using a cheater bar on the socket to move the tensioner-pulley over makes it easier to hold, so that you can pull the belt over the lip of the alternator pulley. If someone is handy to let them hold the cheater bar over while you slip the belt on makes it SO much easier. I never really loosened the adjuster, I just put the socket on it and pulled. Make sure the belt is routed properly.... -L |

yeah I have a bar on the adjuster. I didn't loosen it, just meant I had the tensioner pushed all the way to the right. I was able to hold that down with my foot, but still couldn't get the belt on. it is so close, but can't get it on the lip enough to catch. it's routed properly, just wish there was a way to stretch the belt a bit. guess I will put the old one back on for now. |

I don't have a Rover, so I haven't seen exactly what you are talking about, BUT, this has worked for me before. Put the belt in some nice hot water for a few minutes, then try it. The rubber, and metal should expand enough to make it easier. |

IF you have your foot pressing the tensioner all the way down and you still can't get it on, then one of two things are wrong. 1) you have the wrong belt, 2) you have not routed the belt properly. Think about it, if your pully is all way down, and you managed to slip it on, it's only a matter of time before the belt will burn. The tensioner needs to be able to do it's job absorbing the belt slack from the effects of various engine pulley wobbles. I know you beleive the pattern is correct, but check it again, then double check if you have the right belt. Good luck. |

the pattern is correct, without a doubt. I ended up putting the old belt back on, the same way. I am also looking at the diagram. don't get me wrong, it's close, very close, just couldn't get it on by myself. |
