Depression has set in, and set in DEEEEP!!! I just bought my first home and it's a 100 mile commute each day. So, I am FORCED to sell my Disco and buy a more practical car for now to save on gas and the milage. I can't afford to pay off a Land Rover and pay a mortgage. (along with student loans, credit cards, etc) So for the first year or so, until I build up some equity in my home and can afford to purchase a Rover once again.....I'm out. I am literally depressed!!! No 4X4, and especially my Disco. Actually feels like a chic dumped me or someone is dying. Something about these rigs, the community, the lifestyle. EVERYDAY I stepped into my rover it made me smile and filled me with pride!!! I am actually gonna miss the quirks, the electrical gremlins and all the everyday crap this truck gave me. It was all VERY WELL worth it in retrospect. I will count the days until I rejoin you people. I WILL do everything possible to expedite the time it takes to seat my ass in British leather and curse the ABS light for coming on for no reason. I'll pop in here from time to time and read yet another posting of "which oil is better" or "does anyone have the diagram to rout ethe serpntine belt?" I love that shit!!! Thanks to EVERYONE that takes the time to post suggestions, takes the time to make fun of someones ugly mud flaps or over Amoralled tires. In the meantime, keep on truckin' and make sure the world NEVER forgets that Land Rovers truly are............... THE BEST 4X4X FAR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

Just think of it as a verry long repair and when you get it back it will be as good as new. Because it will be a new one But in the mean time this place is for rover lovers and not just owners. So keep on droping in your heart is pure, you are always welcome. Ross Thoma |

I hear ya too Joe about the cost of housing out here .. Dee isn't kidding - like 350-400K for a cracker box ... Still, (IMHO) it's the smartest investment you can make right now. My first purchase, I couldn't imagine how I was going to make ends meet ... everyone told me they felt the same way on their first purchase. In a year, you'll look back and be glad. I like what Ross had to say ... Well said Kim |

Up here in NE we have the same housing-cost problem. The Boston area pays pretty well but has a huge cost-of-living. So, southern New Hampshire has become little more than a Boston suburb. Although some local jobs in NH pay pretty well, they do not compare to Boston. Over the last few years market value on homes within commuting distanace of Boston have gone thru the roof, actually making it impossible for some locals to live in their own communities any more. When we bought our first house a couple months ago, we moved pretty far north of the major NH population centers (I have a 45 minute commute each way without traffic). Here we got a 2000 sqft home on 5 acres of woodland for about $25k less than a similar sized house on a 1/4 acre lot costs 20 miles closer to Boston. Unbelievable. In San Diego County we have one of the heighest ratios of pay to cost of housing in the US, an average of 47% of the medium family income now goes towards housing. The employers in our area pay 15 to 30 % less than most other markets for similar job skill sets and technolgy pay's the worst now that all the not.coms died off I could increase my Day Job pay by almost 30% if i moved north to Irvine. Common name for getting burned around here is "Sunshine Pay".. But they charge higher than the average for there services and products. Another reason not to live here, Im a local born and rasised and have family so im stuck.... |

Joe, Anything but sell.....consider taking on a part-time evening or weekend job, I know it's gonna suck giving up free time, but if you sell, and then look to get back in later, it's gonna cost more than you will gain with time. Check out your other options before you decide. |

It really doesn't have anything to do with the cash. I CAN pull it off if I had to, no prob. But to pay that ton of dough each month to have my Rover in the garage Monday-Friday........well, it's costly just to have as a weekend vehicle. The mileage would DESTRY the thing if I commuted the 500 miles minimum per week!!!! So, for now, I think it's wise to re-prioritize and sell out for the year (maybe less) and buy a 39 mile/gallon Honda commuter. I don't mind the Rover, but it places additional financial strain on my wife who contributes to our bills and my family that feels the need to butt in our business..........I AM Italian and that just goes with the territory... Thanks for all of your input!!! I look forward to asking for advice with my Rover in the spring or early summer. By then the 98's or 99's will be dirt cheap with all of their initial kinks worked out. |

DEE.......... What do YOU think I should ask for and take for my Disco considering the local market around here? Not TOO many in the trader, and the ones that are cheap seem to have higher mileage than mine. You've seen how clean it is. To refresh your memory, it's a 98 DI. About 59,800 miles on it. Serviced and maintained WELL!! |

Id go high if your not in a hurry to sell. List it high and lower each week until you get a buyer 17 to 17.500 range sounds like a good start check fridays Trader. Ill put a call into my friend to see where there at in price... Hold all comments Nay Sayers this is Southern California were used to paying 30 to 40% higher than the rest of the country and i know you all can get a 95 DI with 12k miles for 7k Joe also put the disclaimer "Negotiable, Best offer" Lifestyle forces sale LOL The Point is get them to come out to look at it then negotiate. Also you might have a better chance of selling it if it has a set of my Diff-Guards... LOL |

I sold my Disco some time ago. That wasn't too terribly bad. What really hurt is when the kid I sold it to ROLLED IT about a month later. On the interstate, of all places! I'd have been okay if he'd tipped it down the side of a hill, but this kid apparently wasn't paying attention talking on his cell phone, thought he was drifting out of the lane, and turned the wheel sharply. The resulting roll was caused by his failure to control the vehicle, excessive speed, and some other weird charge (I forget, now, but he was ticketed for all the above charges as well as reckless driving). Impressively, basically all it did was round-off the corners and take the roof rack off. But in an extremely sour dose of irony, the alpine windows and both sunroofs, which had NEVER leaked since I bought the thing new in October 1994, were some of the first things to be smashed out LOL I must say, though, I'm having a hard time adjusting to my current car, a new Marauder. I have no idea what to do to a vehicle that doesn't burn oil, doesn't leak power steering fluid or transmission fluid, has no electrical quirks, and averages 28 mpg commuting. And for something that approaches the weight of a Discovery, it'll run from 0-60 in about 7 seconds flat and pass a 1/4-mile in slightly over 14 seconds at 100 mph (at least it did last weekend) |

High speed trouble free driving is way overrated. Especialy when the wife is on your ass and the is nothing to crawl under in the garage. LOL Ross Thoma P.S. Sorry about your late disco. I still cant part with my 1st wife "1995 Ford Ranger". I found out how to keep it though, we will be moving to Michigan in a house with ample parking unlike in the South Loop of Chicago. Woo Hoo!!!! |
