I dropped down on my slider and bent it up into the body, which tweaked the body so now my door is at a slightly downward angle. It still opens and shuts but the gap in front of the window now is to large and makes noise at freeway speeds, while handle end hits the door frame when closing. Any ideas on how I'm going to fix this? The door is tightly attached to the body, the body itself seems to be the problem. |

Scott, Sorry to hear of the mishap. Are both front and rear doors on that side mis-aligned now? Seems to me that if you can't pick up on the bottom of the door and pull up hard (won't work I bet) you may want to visit a body shop. Let me know what happens. This is exactly why I chose the RTE sliders without an outrigger... Ron Ward |

RoverTym. It was mounted in the standard RTE way with a combo of bolts and rivnuts. They all held the slider itself is what bent. The bend is in front of the area that is attached, just behind the front tire. |

Ron, It is only the front door. I already yanked on the door and it is firmly attached to the door frame still, which isn't moving. It don't think the outrigger did me in because it is not angled up any differently than the main part of the slider. |

Pull out the carpet in the footwell and pull off the slider. I think it will be clear what you bent. Post a pic of the damage when you have a good look at it if you can. A BFH, porta power if you got one, and some jacks should be able to get it strait enough. The fact that the slider did not bend is truly impressive. Ron |

If its just the door (doubt it but it would be nice ) try loosening the bolts and adjusting where the hinge mounts. It is possible that you knocked them out of allignment. Ron |

Oh no, the slider bent all right. Right up into the body. It bulged out the back of the wheel arch, which I just pushed back in by hand. I didn't notice the greater damage until on the way home the passenger door was making a lot of wind noise which couldn't be fixed by opening and shutting or by adjusting the window. This morning I examined further and figured out the gap between the window and the door frame was about twice as large as it should be on the leading edge. |

Damn dude, just how hard did you come down on that thing? I have a set of those sliders and have bashed them a few times and the thought of what it would take to bend them.. Ouch.. You sure that they just didn't crush in your sill in the front and rip the bolt holes in the rear? |

I haven't taken it off yet but it looks like the attachments held ok. You can see the bow in the slider from the side. I don't know why it bent like it did, I hit hard but not THAT hard. |

And before everyone gets carried away with wondering about the quality of the RTE sliders and thinking someone elses are better , let me say this. They boy must have knocked the dog shit out of it for one , and secondly , that is the most vulnerable spot on any Discovery slider. That front section is just out there hanging with no support..You have the light duty set or the heavy set? Kyle |

I'll try and get some pics loaded up. They are the regular HD RTE's. As far as the wack they took, well it was hard. It made my hazard lights start blinking for no apparent reason, I had to turn the truck off and back on before they would stop. But, I was just headed down a rocky but not in any way difficult part of the trail and was moving along, just coasting in first-low, nither my passenger or I saw this as a obstacle. Maybe I was going to fast but I as suprised at the damage. |

Scott, I'm curious to see the extent of the bend in the slider. The sliders have a natural bend already to mold to the shape of the car (as I'm sure you know). It's hard to imagine that the attachments would hold that firmly and the slider itself would bend significantly from a hit like you describe. I just put these babies on my rig and was halfway considering another one or two rivnut bolts at the very front. An ACE rig loses the very front pass side carriage bolt due to the ACE sensor that lines up directly with that front bolt, which instead becomes just another rivnut. Is yours and ACE rig? |

Well, for what it is worth I have a D1 and I have come down on my RTE slidders hard a few times tripping the lights.. I'm positive that I would crush my door sill long before these slidders bent.. Of course I haven't hit them on the ends yet mostly in the center and on the edges (out riggers).. So far so good.. |

OK, so as further clarify the matter I went home and took off the slider during lunch. The rivnuts and bolts are all firmly in place and the holes are still round. There is a bend in the sill in front of the last attachemt point. It is about five inches long, inch and a half across, a quarter inch deep and goes back and up from the point where the bottom of the sill welds to the other section. The slider appears slightly bent but there was a small gap between the slider and the sill on the bottom. Remember it went up enough to bulge out the sheet metal, so it looks to me to be a case of flex not bend. Still, I don't see how it effected the fit of my door in the frame. |

Sorry, I don't have a digital camera just lying around to toss pics on with, and of course the one here at the office has gone missing. Proably some bastard like me using it for personal business. As far as the mounting, it was done exactly as instructed and held during the impact. There is no damage to the rivnuts, bolt holes, etc. I am just putting another of the same back on. I have confidence that there the RTE slider is about as strong as they come. I'll just be more careful. I don't think anything is impervious to damage. I guess I just hit it hard in the wrong spot. |

It's not the slider that needs to be bomb-proof, it's the sill. I've seen a number of RTE sliders do exactly the same thing - bend the sill. I think it has to do with the large lever arm created by the nerf bar on the RTE slider. Drop down on the nerf and look out. if you simply dropped onto the bottom of the slider it probably would have been ok. If you want true Taliban-proof sliders, you need to mount them to the frame. keith discosaurus |

Scott, Like investigating a race car drivers helmet following a crash, what does the slider look like? Scraped, dented, what? That can tell you alot about the exact point of impact. Did a rock jam between the slider and the sill protector and possibly jam them apart? I know on my sliders (RTE HD without outrigger) there is a small gap between the slider plate and the sill protection plate. Hmmm.... Ron Ward |

The hit seems to have been on the main part of the slider, not the nerf bar, on the outer edge. More of a chipped appearance, no dent. Again for the record D1. You know Ron, if you wouldn't have been studying and come along, I wouldn't have had this problem, because I would have been behind you to see it coming. |

Rovertym Sliders sound like the Firestone Tires of Rock Sliders! It's all about Physics man, Physics! Not about welding as big a hunk of metal as you can find!!! Rovertym Sliders are like putting a super thick MAGNUM Condom on a asian man, and wondering why she's pregnant! Rovertym makes great stuff! But everyone makes mistakes. Also, your not suppost to go bouncing your sills off of rocks! Slow, Careful, Steady! Seatbelts aren't for crashing into brick walls either! I think Rovertym is getting a bum rap for the weak design of the Disco Sills. I also think it seems like Rovertym sliders are bending more than anyone elses, but in fact it's probably more like sooo many rock crawlers are buying/using there stuff, and feeling indestructable so they aren't as careful as they should be. Who Knows??? Rovertym still rocks and there customer service is number one! |

If Scott would just post some pictures, it would help greatly. Until we see some pictures, we shouldn't jump into conclusions. Another thing, John at RT never claimed his sliders were bullet proof. I just can't envision the slider bending at the front before the mounting gives way in some way. here's food for thought: what are we talking about here? what's the title of this thread? SLIDER what happened to the slider? it was banged onto a rock ("slider impact"). Sliders are made to slide, not bang straight down. Hit hard enough and something is gonna give. This may be too much of a good thing - slider was so beefy it withstood the impact and also the mounting of the slider reinforced the whole length of the sill so much that the impact was tranlated from the slider/sill to the whole side of the Disco. But these are just my idle thoughts....really want to see those straight-on and looking-down-the-side pics... |

its been said but i will point it out again. the insurance companies and several other agencies spend money and alot of time crashing cars. why you ask...well children let me tell you ....they study the crash damage and from that we get safer cars. rovertym, $G, and a dozen more make great products but no body makes the perfect product. there is always a way to improve anything that is made. to say that rovertym is getting bashed is wrong, i see alot of folks curious as to how his truck and part failed and what could be done to improve and/or prevent it from occurring again. in all likely hood it was a matter of how it was said PHYSICS...too much left foot and not enuff restraint. it happens believe me i know, i have that same problem to much balls and not enuff brain. anyways they make a great product, no one is bashing anybody and sometimes shit just happens. |

Yeah Mike but some people jump off to wrong conclusions quickly because they dont know any better and as always , its nice to have both sides present on the board. Penisaurus back there is talking like he is seeing sliders bending sills right an left but he gives no data to back that up. He also talks about mounting to the frame which is like 9 Miles away from the sill and wont do a damn think for slider impacts. All that will do is buckle the frame cause its so damn far away and there is too much leverage on it. Also , the dude said the slider bent as well as the sill. THink about a slider impact for a moment. The Disco is a big 4 thousand pound hammer , the Rock is the anvil , and the poor slider and sill is like nothing when it gets hammered between them. Especially if you hit that front portion which is just hanging in the air. Sure you can add braces and gussets and 9 million more dollars worth of design and engineering but isnt it just easier to drive like you know what the hell is going on ? Blue said it perfectly , they are sliders. for to slide on.... One of the rocket scientists here should be able to tell you the exact amount of force it takes to bend that short section of box .That should give plenty of insight..... I see nothing wrong with the RTE sliders other then those things sticking out would bash my cripple leg if I had em... Kyle |

good points Eric, and kyle that is exactly what i was attempting to say...i had this tirade wrote but i will say it like this. you have those who would complain if LR delivered a gold plated d90 (with lockers and a winch, both hydralic and electric) and Lara Croft riding shotgun. so if you dont like the product dont buy it. make your own and hammer test them and report back if they hold up as well as those currently on the market. |

I would like to enter my take on all this...First of all I dont see any bashing here, naturally everyone wants to understand what happened. We have some really good input and are actually answering the question of what happened. Scott did, going downhill, drop off and hit a hidden obsticle....here we have momentum and a sudden drop onto the front unsupported part of the slider, whether frame mounted or sill mounted, this is an unsupported part of the slider directly behind the front wheel. As Kyle puts it the "sweet spot" for good reason. Scott hit under the main beam so at the point of impact the beam did flex and bulge the fender from contact and then rebounded back close to its original position, but not entirely. This explains the bulging of the sill directly under the hit spot. All the impact was straight up. Blue diagnosed it very well to say the the slider took the hit, the mounting held, so the force of the impact passed up the post. I think the main beam flexing up did absorb some of the energy directed up. Someone asked about whether I would re-inforce that area but I dont think thats a good approach as I could do that very easily but we see in this case the ability for the main beam to flex somewhat may have saved some more serious damage. No one doubts Scotts piller post did move enough to where his door has changed position,as I understand to the point it wasnt noticible till he heard the change in wind sound, but it has changed which says the piller did change its shape. so whats a slider to do? Mount it to the frame and you have about 12" of leverage plus to make it reasonably stong quite the spider web of bracing, connecting legs, gussets and hang up points all welded to the frame because bolting isnt gonna cut it with the leverage applied here. We can bolt to the body mount out riggers, I personally dont believe in that as thats 2 mounting points in the lenght of the slider and the outriggers are only 14 guage as well with leverages applied to bolted mounts. I dont say mine are the best, I just believe in them all around. The real thing here is pros and cons always come out 50/50 with not one solution able to answer all scenerios. |

That little outrigger can push you away from sure door damage which at times is good but can also increase pressure at weird angles into the body mounts which could also cause more pressure pushing in as opposed to up and possibly bend the sill. Maybe they will have to follow McDonald's hot coffee problem and put a disclaimer that says warning rock sliders are for rock sliding - not bashing. |

Well John, here's another way to look at it - think about your front bumper...that's arguably a very stout piece of hardware up front. I'm sure you can bump a tree, rock, or car and the bumper will come out relatively unscathed, but the Disco itself may be tweaked. Something has to give somewhere along the line... |

Glad I saw this post. I had the same thing happen to my D2. Unfortunately, it doesn't sound like I came down nearly as hard as Scott did. Everything looks fine. Slider only has some scratches, sill isn't bent, but the door's a bit tweaked. It broke the door latch in the process as well. I guess the moral is: don't bang on your sliders for fun! chu |

Well, anything we bolt to our truck gets bolted to 14 guage at best. I dont think anyone can sell many bumpers, shock mounts or any other attacho that bends readily or breaks first without catching the wrath of discoweb, customers, etc. So it looks like the consumer wants strenght, best mounting possible and attachments to winch, pull, jerk and snatch on. Bottom line it gets down to good sensible judgement about what we are doing. Unpredictable events do occur as with Scott being on an easy trail and a hidden drop off did him no good. We do wheel and call the sport rock crawling. Look at the attention that has been given to crush cans and the possibilities of damage occuring with "impact give" planned in. I would rather build a sturdy product that depends on good judgement of use than build a product that gives as that product will not sell....attention has been given slider nerf bars, but sliders come with or with out them. Its the buyers choice. Personally they have done me very well in side protection, there are opinions otherwise. So they come with or without. The very first customer for sliders wanted aluminium sliders. The sizes we use comes 1/8" wall thickness only with sharp edges, no radius strenghts whatsoever. So anyway we try to cover all the sellable bases we can, and homeruns are elusive. Taliban Sliders... Space age Titanium matls Retractable nerf bars Energy absorbing hydralic mounting with adjustible height Able to hold 10 gals of gas and 50 meters of air Side impact internal air bags Built in floatation bags for river crossings Temp control for Bud Lite internal keg and tap handle Self cleaning Total.....$62,500a per pair. Penisaurus - hehehe ...still trying to kiss ass, 'eh ? Ask 'em yourself - two of them are on the board. Fact is, RTE sliders stick out farther (which is good most of the time) and when you drop on the edge, more force gets transfered into the sill (you know - lever arm). The sill can't handle it and bends. Explain to me again how that makes RTE look bad ? |

I thought that 3 of the 6 went down too fast so I checked the tonnage...now why couldn't they make the bottle size 12.8oz so I can get an honest (American honest) 12oz of Guiness? |

oh i have seen those. they are pretty swank bottles. have yet to toss any back. have always stuck to the draught style cans. mmmmm. glad they figured out a good solution to having draught style in a bottle. so much more civilized now. |

yes, by the pint is best, but the wife drew the line at bringing my old college kegerator in the house - too hot to keep it going in the garage, so out the door it went... |

You had a kegerator too? I think that's why I got a Series Land Rover, so I could stay out in the garage.... -L |

I knew I liked you guys! Great Taste in Auto's AND Suds! Hey, you know what's the best thing to have after a nice tall pint of Guiness??? Another pint of Guiness! LOL Light beer to me is half a pint of Guiness. People who drink Guiness don't drink and drive because they wouldn't want to run the risk of spilling any Guiness! Plus it's easier to find your car after drinking bud. LOL |

>"Light beer to me is half a pint of Guiness" LOL - I like that one! A good friend of mine (British chap) works in a framing shop and has an impressive collection of Guiness art. He also has an impressive collection of Bob Marley art and an even more impressive collection of guns...good taste knows no cultural bounds. |

I'm reluctant to bring this back to the original topic. But, for all who care, my A pillar is out of place creating the extra gap and noise. I'm just going to leave it. Too much $$ to fix it and it seems not to have created a leak. I'll just fill the gap with some black foam tape, or such. |

I know it is out of my league. If I can get it done at a reasonble cost maybe, but the guy I spoke with today said $100's. |

I am telling you look at it and you can figure a way to persuade it back into position. Also you can cheat a bit and move the door on the hinges and even add/subtract shims if you don't feel like moving any metal. Ron |

Scott, I have an idea (sound of drinking beer) Just go back down the trail in reverse to see if that knocks it back in place...Wait, that won't work. (more beer) The rock will be on the wrong side. Hmmm. (more beer) Ok, start at the end of the trail and drive backward up it, then the rock will be on the correct side! (bathroom break followed by more beer) L_Tilly [email protected] 96 Disco "Beowulf" NH, USA |
