I might have a good lead on a cheap set of wheels to us for off roading and I want a great tire for it. I have a stock D1, so the sizes will be a little small. So, what's out there. I'd love to get swampers, or Interco's but I don't think they make any small enough for me. Thanks, and flame away for not having a lift!!! |

I'm in the North East, well kind of North East. I'm in eastern PA, and most of hte wheelin around here is mixed, a bit of everything. Not much sand though. The tire size will either be: 225/75/16 235/70/16 or maybe 245/75/16. Thanks, Zak |

Zak, I'm in central VA and I'm sure that you and I have similar terrain ... rocks, dirt, and mud. After several weeks of deliberation I have decided on the 245/75 - 16 Dunlop Radial R/Ts. They have excellent severe winter rating and have gotten favoriable reviews from members here. A buddy of mine has them on his X and has never been limited by his tires. I was originally thinking about BFG AT K/O but they are about $20 more per tire than the dunlops. Let us know what you decide on! |

Thanks Eric, did you have to trim your rear fender, or do you have a lift to fit those 245's? THanks for the info. |

nadim, Checked out their website, but the rims i'm looking at are 16"diameter and they do not have anything that will fit the rim, and fit under my rig. Love those tires thought!!! |

Zack, I fit those tires (245/75-16 Dunlop RTs)under my stock-sprung 95 disco for several months before going with a 2" lift. I trimmed my rear fender arches down to about a 1/4" lip using a dremel tool...no rubbing. I really like these tires, they are the best mud AND snow tires you can get and at $93 each from tire rack, a good deal too. I was resisted lifting my truck for several years, and I wish I had done it sooner. The 2" lift OME springs REALLY do improve the on-road handling over the stock springs. What you sacrifice in higher center of gravity is far overcome by the handling improvement of the new springs. As a former SCCA road race & pro rally driver, I put a high premium on the on-road handling of my Disco. These springs give better off-road articulation (even with swaybars) better turn-in and stability in aggressive on-road driving and far better stability when loaded. The ride is only minimally firmer over bumps, with MUCH less wallow and needless sway. Overall it is much more comfortable (50% of that comes from greater confidence). You will need to go with these springs if you plan to use chains You may not need to trim at all if you use Kyles nifty spacer bracket on the rear mounting points of your back fenders. 1. Trim, or bracket your rear fenders (40 min job either way). 2. Get the 245/75-16 Dunlop RTs at Tire Rack 3. Have more fun than you can imagine with this setup. 4. Install a set of 2" lift (max) springs. 5. Have even more fun |

Rich, Thanks for all the info, very helpful. One of these day's I'll put the 2" RTE lift on. Just not yet. I've always really like dunlops tires. Almost every time i've had to put new tires on a car, I've went with dunlops. I'll look into these tires more. Thanks again, |

I ran 245/75 BFG ATs and MTs bo-th are excellent tires, would recommend the MTs for more offroad and ATs for more on-road and wet. Other threads discuss this. Now I run 235/85 16 Trxus M/T you can check out the differences in my gallery. |

Brian, How do you like the 235/85/16 Trxus M/T tires? I am currently running 245/75/16 tires, but am seriously looking to get a set of Trxus for my extra set of rims, how do they handle on road and off, any acceleration problems? Thanks |

Sorry about the delay responding. Since my Disco is pretty much a dog to begin with I did not notice a big difference from the 245/75 to 235/85. I do shift down to 3rd and sometimes 2nd on some of the mtn hwy passes here in CO. The Trxus are getting more and more loud with time it seems. They are far better than the BFG ATs on rocks and seem better than than BFG MTs in wet (they do have some siping). I have been out with a jeep that runs the big foot ATs and they do very well, but then again this driver is most excellent too. |

I've always liked the set of Trxus I've been running for about a year, but I agree with Brian that they are getting louder and the rubber appears to be hardening. |

I have Trxus on a 3/4 ton Ford and have experienced the same noise increase with age. They are also awful!!! in rain because there is more tread gap than rubber on the road.In mud they make up for it all. Incidently I live in MUD country, South Louisiana. My $.02 worth Gordon |

I have this "temporary" off road truck, an '89 Trooper. I bought it dirt cheap as a 'tweener until my other car is paid off and I buy a Discovery. The way I look at it, every penny I spend on the Trooper is a penny I can't spend on the Disco. Other then some good recovery gear (thanks EE!) the ONLY off road upgrade I have made is 4 new tires. Based on recommendations here, I went with the Dunlop Radial Rover RT's. I needed something that would be livable on road, and wear decently. But I didn't want to be terribly limited off road either. I felt the at the MT's were a bit too aggressive, and the AT's were not aggressive enough. Also, since I only paid $800 for the truck, I didn't want to spend $130 a piece for tires. (BFG, ProComps, etc.) I also needed them to perform well in rain, snow and ice. I've finally had a chance to get them off road. My first extended 'wheeling with the new tires. The results were great! The terrain was a broad mix of rocky, muddy, wet, dry, slippery... you name it. Only 1 deep mud hole which was no problem. We spent 2 hours on a long network of snowmobile trails and logging roads in central Vermont. (all legal of course) The treads clear themselves out really well, and the tires showed no signs of distress even after LOTS of rock rubbing. They are only slightly louder on-road as compared to the worn, generic AT's that were on it. At $76 each from tire rack (235/75-15) they were a bargain. If you do the kind of extra-tough, backcountry, rock crawling, extended wheeling that Kyle, Ho, John, et al do, then you might want something more aggressive. But if you are like me, and the majority of guys here, and only wheel on the weekends, then I think this might be the perfect "compromise" tire. I know that this is what I'll be putting on my Disco when I get it too. http://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Dunlop&tireModel=Radial+Rover+R%2FT |

I just put a set of Goodyear MT/R's, 225/75-16 on a set of D90 steel wheels on my 97 D1. They ride quiet at 75mph, look pisser and so far work awesome off road. I live in NH and supposedly are great in the snow, we'll see.....FYI... |

I'm really starting to like the Dunlop RT's. My OEM's are starting to wear out, and I may just have to replace them with those. I might go with 245 and do a little trimming and tucking. Thanks for the replies. I'd really like to buy 15" rims from Dee, and put some Procomps or Baja's on there for a strickly off road tire!!! |
