Looking into a 94-96 Discovery I. What type of mileage can I expect to get out of a well maintained 3.9/4.0 engine, as well as the 5-speed manual and automatic transmission?

Lot's....should get 250 - 300k

I have a 96' 4.0L 5spd with 120k on it and she works offroad once a week. No problems worth mentioning yet, except the normal oil leaks...don't bother with these, if you're on the coast it helps protect against rust.....

Thanks for the info. Have you replaced the clutch yet? I'm guessing yes, and if so, at what mileage? I'm an old Landcruiser owner, so I get used to leaks and maintenance, and I'm trying to get a good idea of what to expect with a used Discovery purchase. However, living in Arizona I don't worry too much about rust, at least not as much as the guys near salt water.

Original clutch.....

Never broken down, never had any thing give me headaches, except the leaks. Great vehicle and yet so many complain....I sometimes wonder....

So many rovers, so few problems, I do all work on them myself though.....

Cruisers are great, recently put a 3B into a series rover, could even be an option for my diesel Disco project coming up soon.

Check out www.4x4labs.com for some interesting diesel conversions using Mercedes diesels. Thanks for the info. Looks like I'll be getting into a 1996 Discovery SD pretty soon!

I've a manual 94 Disco and had to replace the •••••• and clutch after 90k. I don't know how abused the vehicle was prior to buying it though but I suspect it was kinda rough.

150K on the automatic transmission in my 1995 Disco and it's DEAD.

It was a slow process, first the power started fading and then this past July, it went out completely while I was hauling a 600 pound load of sugar.

Looks like a $2500 replacement job.
