It will start leaking just after the warranty expires...

Just think of it as a perpetual oil change.

Yeah, I have lots of leaks (make a note for my service at 15k Ron). I have leaks coming between theengine and transmission, but it is a very slow leak. Nothing too detectable in level over the course of 3k miles.

I just changed oil on sunday, and cleaned up bottom end. Looked under this morning when I adjusted my steering stop and there is fresh oil again.

Self lubricating.

leaks are not a big deal unless you

a:ignore your levels
2:go deep water diving
C:expect them to get better by them selves
4:are a fool ...example below

"land rover discovery's suck, my transmission leaked and leaked till it failed"

the irony is that the ultimate yuppie truck is the worst one they could pick if they have no intrest in caring for it

If it doesn't leak, there's no oil in it. :)

You know, it's funny.... I've always heard about these leaky rovers - but I've owned a 97 DI, 98 DI, and now a 2001 DII, and not a spot on the garage floor from them. Maybe I just pick the good ones. haha

I just took my Disco2 in for it's 22.5K service and the dealer fixed a transfer case leak and a rear diff leak, but no engine oil leaks **knock on wood** yet...

I'm at 32K and no leaks, but a few "seeps" that will eventually leak.

I've seen lots of Chrysler and Mitsubishi products that never leaked a drop, but smoked all the way down the road from bad rings and valve seats.

I'll take the leak if I ever get a choice :)

My 1999 D2 leaked from the day I took it home until about 6 months into it. I have not had an oil leak since then... hmmm... I better go check the levels. :)

My neighbor has had a JGC and a Acura MDX both leave puddles in his driveway. At first I thought it was just the Jeep but then I noticed fresh oil under the MDX whenever he moved it. So after less than a year with the MDX he's traded it in for a Ford Exploder and sold the JGC. So go figure.

99D2, only leaks that left anything on the ground were the radiator and the intake manifold gasket (coolant). Both fixed/replaced under warranty, no problems since (I'm under the truck about every two or three days).

Just turned 45K and I'm looking around for extended warranties, will probably go with a dealer option, they've been so good to me so far.

Well from my experience any truck I have ever owned, ford, chevy, gmc, and now land rover, always started to leak something when it got older. My LR is not leaking at 33K, knock on lots of wood, but I know that by at by least 80K it will start. Maybe I should try a Toyota, shouldn't leak till 250K hahaha LOL!!!

'00 DII. 49,217 miles and no leaks yet.

Of course, next month after my warranty is out it'll probably start pouring, but so far, so good!

How the hell do you add transmission fluid to a DII if it is leaking. I love my truck but ....what the hell were they thinking. Also, no fuel filter? I heard it is imbedded in the fuel pump - that makes sense. Instead of replacing a $10 part you replace a $300 (or thereabouts)......better for their bottom line, not ours.

Leaks? landrover? My friggin radio leaks! Seriously though, I have 133k on a 95 and only my transfer box and power steering leaked (about a year ago). I put some no-leak in them and the leak stopped (yes, I still have fluids).
As for the new trans. with no dipstick and lifetime oil, you better hope that it leaks under warranty so you can get it fixed free.

LOL!

Just like the SR-71. You couldn't keep gas in that pig until cruising at speed around angels 20.

I am happy with my D2 as far as oil goes. But then again, every weekend I pop the hood and crawl underneath to check stuff out. Brakes are another problem....

Paul,

I did the Big Rotor and Caliper upgrade on my 88 Rangie afer a trip down from Tioga Pass 9k plus feet. I was being pushed by a 23ft trailer and the trailer barkes did not work that well... Man the smell and that nice multi shade of blue color of the rotors were also the thump thump thump for 600 miles was great... it was expensive but worth it...

Hey Dee,

I don't understand how the Best 4x4xFar has such a POS engineered brake system. When I came back from Killington, I replaced all the pads and applied a generous amount of that anti-squeal crap. So now, instead of all four squealing together, now it is only the right rear and it is loud as all hell. Next Wednesday I am dropping off the Pig for its 30K service. Hopefully Ron and the boys at Main Line can the evil noise go away.

Ron , Make the evil noise go away....

Hell, my auto light sensing POS rear view mirror leaks black oil...seriuosly! Now I can't even see out of it. Anybody know of a way to fix it?

Other leaks to watch out for: Engine, ••••••, t-case, front diff, rear diff, swivel pin (well, D1 anyway), coolant, not to mention power steering and brake fluid. Mine leaks all of the above, except coolant and brakes, but at 150k, she's still going strong...uhmm, maybe strong isn't the right word for the rover, it runs anyway! I just fill'em up at every oil change. You gotta love it.

Leaking Mirror? I have heard of that before somewhere on this site. That just requires a replacement.

Explorer? NO! The other car in the stable is a VW and that thing is amazing. 65K in five years and no problems other than 1 set of brake pads and a clamp for the muffler. Good little car.

Kyle doesn't like the word •••••• because •••••• is the not the proper nomenclature for transmission. Personally, I like using the word ••••••, even though Garrett gets it confused with something else.

It's not the fluid leaks that scare me with British cars......it's when the smoke starts leaking out of those skinny little wires....then things really get spooky

Paul, i had a mirrior leak, the fluid was a light oil like Baby Oil. Never had one on a Disco but I had a IROC that had a similar auto dim style mirror, it leaked slightly then stoped . Now I jinxed myself the POS Disco i have will have a puddle on the console when I go out to it.. is that fluid flammable?

I don't think you can call the lucas ecu a computer....more like an abacus that is missing a bead or two. could you imagine......instead ofyour computure crashing it just seeps and gobs oil all over your fingers. And then a key or two would stop working for awhile and then start working again. Would give personal computing a whole new meaning.

I have a 1965 Series IIa that hasn't leaked a drop in a year. It usually does two or three drops at a time.

My 1994 Discovery doesn't leak; unless I drive it, then stop it somewhere for a half an hour to 24 hours, then drive it again. Then, and only then does it leak when I actually take the time to check for leaks - but at no other time does it actually leak.

Are we talking about oil or rain water?
