I need some help, My 98 Disco LSE 4.0 has a terible hesitation when I travel at cruising speeds (60-70mph)for any length of time. The car will stutter several times repetitively and then it goes away. I have replaced the fuel filter, plugs (with bosch platinum +4), and plug wires (magnecore competition). Still, the problem continues. I also took the car to Autozone to see if any codes had been made. I thought maybe it was the o2 sensors, but there are no lights on and no codes came up. I'm stumped and need help. I'm getting frustrated. Thank you for any replies.

I´ve read a few times that the ignition amplifier module (with pre-GEMS injection systems) causes intermittent ignition failure when being faulty and warm. Very annoying and hard to prove without trial-exchange. I would bet on the ingnition system (coils) or fuel supply but have not enough experience with the V8 (especially if as new as yours) to tell you.
What I would try (if nobdy on this boards knows a clue) is to contact RPI (www.rpiv8.com) or mark adams in GB ([email protected] if I remember it right). They deal with these things on a daily basis obviously. Hopefully they would have time to answer an e-mail.
I´ve been told the o2-sensors behind the cats only monitor its function and their information is not used by the ECU to modify ignition and fuel injection. If so, a faulty cat should breathe out bad fumes but must not influence the engine running.

I would check the speed sensor before anything else. Sounds very familiar.

i'll third the Speed sensor
does it stutter or does it feel like full is cutoff? when it "stutters" and you give it gas what happens?

When it happens to me, the engine will seem to cutoff, and my speed will drop about 5mph. if i leave my foot on the gas while it does this the rpm's will not move either, they stay at what it was at when it cut out. kinda like what a governer would feel like.

Cheaper from Nathan at Discount Rovers. I agree with the VSS. Just replaced mine and it fixed the problem described.

Thank you all very much for your responses. I'm assuming the VSS refers to the speed sensor. Where is the VSS located and is this something I can change myself. I am comfortble with working on cars but I am no Mechanic if you know what I mean. To answer Danno's question, it is more of a stutter, however, when it occurs and I depress the gas pedal down further, the stutter lasts longer and the motor sounds bogged down. I am also ordering a cable to connect the OBDII computer to an old laptop so if the VSS doesn't work I can maybe diagnose the problem as it is happening. Last question, what does the VSS control and what does it do? Thank you all again.

the VSS provides road speed data to the ECM (Engine Control Module). i believe that the VSS is a hall effect sensor and when it loses it's signal, the ECM thinks the Disco is going faster than it should and the fuel is cutoff to save the engine.
it's on the left side of the xfer case near the parking brake

Thanks again, I ordered the part tonight from roverconnection.com and it ships in the morning. I'm looking forward to having the problem resolved. Its been doing this since early July. I just found this site a week or two ago. I'm really pleased to have a place to get great answers to my problems. This is my first high milage car and I expected to have some problems with it, but now I know where to turn. Thank you all. Your expertise is appreciated.

Try a can of BG44k. So far no stutter problems. If it happens again I will get VSS. $24.00 at the dealer.
