im looking in the 95-96 range for a disco.
what would be a number to stay away from in terms of mileage?
also, what kind of gas mileage do they get?

LOL-many of us have high mileage on our Discos from that range and would be likely to tell you not to worry if you have any inkling as to the service history.

I am the 8th owner of my '95 and I have little to no service history and just recently exceeded 150K, and... I drive it ~100 miles each day.

So far, the most expensive repair I have suffered was a cranking motor when it broke in Detroit and I had to pay the dealer to fix it. Other than a radiator, they have all been fairly small insignificant failures that weren't particularly expensive to fix. Of course, my ABS and air bags don't work, but I didn't want either.

Once you get one and fall in love with it (you will) and fix everything that needs attention, then all that will be required is to adhere to the maintenance schedule and wheel it occasionally.

These things, with maintenence, can go on forever. I wouldn't really look at mileage too much, as long as it has been well taken care of.

You can find a '94 or '95 in the $5k to $8k range easy enough these days.

Usually, the newer the better, ie, a '99 D1 would be a good choice, but, you'll be paying ~$15k or more for it.

The big thing is, be prepared to work on it. You'll become a decent shadetree mechanic, or else, if you have to have someone else do the work, be prepared to budget a respectable chunk of money towards upkeep/mechanic's fees.

FWIW...

I'm at 119k on my '96, driving an average of 3k a month for the past few months. Saw some black smoke this morning, first sign it's given me that it's got some miles on it.

My '95 has 113K on it and is running pretty well. 2 main things I'd like fixed are noisy lifters (I believe that's the noise) and an exhaust leak. Other that that its been a reliable machine with no major work since I got it about a year ago. I paid $9500 with tax, title, and license fee's.

Here is a tip in searching for a used Disco, buy one with running boards. A disco with running boards, that are not bent to hell, has seen only light off road use if any at all.

look for one with stock michelin's, they are an expensive tire and probably went to the dealer to get them replaced, my thinking is they also probably went there for repairs.

I ran my 94 past 220k, and I heard it is still going strong.

You need to look into how the mileage is accumulated. I would be inclined to purchase a high mileage Highway runner before I would get a low mileage grocery getter.
