Does a small amount of grease coming out of the front U-joint on the rear prop shaft mean it's getting bad. Could this be making noise? Other than the grease, how can I test it? http://landrover.mrbaileyshistory.net |

If it's a greasable uj, grease should be coming out of it. |

Grease those nipples...more...more...it can't hurt.. If you are pushing the gas pedal going down the road and don't hear a whine, feel a buzz or rumble the ujs should be fine. IMHO Rovers don't commonly break drive shaft uj's |

please don't remind me, yet another fun surprise for me with the DSII ... non greaseable U joints ... LOL, put one more expensive job & replacement part (greasable U joint) on my list for down the road .. Heard the D2's have a bit of a history with those ... just my luck that will surely blow, (sooner or later) ... probably when I finally save enough $$$ to upgrade my suspension from MD to HD, and new bumper.

"IMHO Rovers don't commonly break drive shaft uj's" For your statement to be correct you must exclude the Rovers non-greaseable u-joints found in the D2's DC. |

Kim, I got a quote from GBR for replacement front drive shaft joints (greaseable) at $99. Pretty good in my book, and not too far down my list. |

Thanks Erik, yes indeed, that does sound good ... my challenge will be the install. I dunno, I'm thinking when I have enough to do the new suspension and bumper, maybe I should get everything done at once(?) ... I'm thinking maybe it is a bit of a job (mechanically) to replace front drive shaft joints. I will most likely have to pay someone to install everything. Oh, and I almost forgot, my tires are the BFG AT KO's 255/70R16 ... LOL, They will be a bit on the small side once I change suspension. Right now they only have 13K miles on them. LOL, it never ends ... Kim |

Please excuse me if I sound reall really stupid, but anyway here it goes. I brought my D2 the other day to the dealer and asked them to lube up the U-joints and all the fittings. Now I just read this thread and I am wondering what the hell is going on. They told me they lubed the driveshafts and fittings but you guys are saying that the D2 doesn't have fittings. I looked in the service guide and there it was in the listings. Lube driveshafts and fittings. Please tell me the truth! I don't really trust LR anymore |

What we're talking about is the front prop shaft. If you take a look there is one zerk fitting on the u-joint near the axle. But at the top of the propshaft near the xtransfer case there is a DC (Hookes Joint in the service manual) with two U-Joints. It's this point that will fail. Those two U-Joints are non-serviceable. |

Thanks for pointing that out to me Al. Could I just go under there and grease it up myself, surface wise that is, would that help? And whats the point of this DC with two u-joints thing? |

I wonder if it's the center kit that fails and not the ujs themselves. I like to see DC with greasable center kit or even greasable ujs in addition to the ck. But on the other end of the driveshaft I prefer non greasables. Typically non-greasable ujs are better. But they do need to be replaced from time to time. Depending on how much muck you run your truck in, that time maybe too often for some people. And if you don't replace them when they heed it, they will fail. So what is it with D2? Lack of maintenance and R&R or lack of strength. Pete, the DC is used to split the angle on the driveshaft between 2 ujs to make sure the ujs run in phase. This prevents vibration in the driveshaft. |
