Last week while doing some offroading around Crested Butte, CO the trailer light on the dash would blink with the use of the turn signals, when I got back on the pavement. Any ideas why? It did stop after I turned the truck off. One good thing did happen though, I must have bumped some wires because my clock now lights up. |

My trailer light lights up with the turn signal for the first 1 or 2 blinks then goes away. Sometimes wile wheeling my emergency flashers come on and the only way to get it so stop is to turn the ignition off, take the key out and restart the engine. (my clock does not light up either) |

Uh guys, the trailer light is SUPPOSED to light up when you use your turn signals...its a reminder for if you are towing a trailer. its not a problem..now the other stuff, well I don't know about that. |

The trailer light should come on only when a trailer is hooked up. Mine did exactly as you describe Durabutt, when my brake and turn signal positive leads got connected. Check for maybe water in the lamp housing, connectors, etc. |

I believe that the trailer light flashes the very first time the arrow flashes signaling that power is going to the trailer circuit and then ceases when it realizes that there is not a trailer hooked up. That is my theory... |

it'll flash once w/o a trailer and should only continue to flash if there is a trailer connected. Mark, that will occur if there is a sharp impact which would trigger the inertia switch. i've set mine off on a pot hole and by hitting the dash hard enough. |

this has happened to my 97 disco. i found the rear light housing mounted to rear bumper flooded with water and rusted.. so i replace the socket and bulb.. check yours out too.. i bet its the same problem. |

what nant says makes sense. the trailer light flashes when the circuit draws more amps than normal (indicating there are extra lights on the circuit). this could be caused by rust or using a higher wattage replacement bulb. you should also check exposed wiring harnesses for insulation in bad condition...paul |

actually the manual says it flashes once to check the system and continues to flash if there is a problem with the trailer system. I pull trailers alot with mine it flashes once when you hit the blinker then stops. if there is a bad bulb on the trailer it flashes all the while that the turn signal is on. if you lose the ground on the trailer it lights up as soon as the trailer is pluged in. |

Is is possible to disconnect the inertia switch? My flashers come on while going over breaking bumps on dirt roads. People look at me like I'm nuts because I'm too lazy to stop and turn them off. |

the trailer light flashes if the system senses there is more draw of amps than just firing off the lights on the truck... usually this means 1 of 5 plugs might be a little corroded... if you have the time.. pull all the plugs out (including the trailer plug which is located in the passenger side in the access panel) clean them with some contact cleaner and then spray with lithium grease.. this should keep all of the contacts from corroding... and the trailer light should only work if you actually have the trailer harness in use. |

I think I found the answer on Disco2.com. It may be the extra turn signal lights on my ARB front bumper. The suggested fix is to replace with lower wattage bulbs. I'll give that a try and report back the results. |

May I put this issue to rest. You should get one blink w/o a trailer connection. Unless both my 99 disco and 94 defender are rusty, damp, or whatever else is below... |

The adapters we use in N America to deal with the shared stop/turn trailer bulbs interfere with the proper operation of this light which is designed for Europe with separate flashers - the trailer warning light (which should keep flashing with a trailer connected) goes out when braking. |

I have an ARB bumper and the second I got it installed and hooked up, the trailer light began flashing everytime I put on the turn signal. Been about a year now, doesn't really bother me. I may try lower wattage bulbs next time to see if it makes a difference, but not a big deal. Chris |
