Hows the gas mileage with that rig?

i was hoping that all the new aerodynamic aspects would increase it...

no such luck.

Good set up, looks like an easy load...

after flinging those hogs up on top for a while it is much nicer to have a lower lift...i usually remove the kayak racks after each trip. the earlier setup had 8 tiny, insecure allen bolts per side. now i leave a few brackets clamped to the lrna rack and with 4, 3/8 in bolts it is on or off...no fuss, no muss...

Pretty cool setup. I would think it might be more aerodynamic the other way around with the bottoms out. I get pretty tired of lifting my kayak up on top of my rack. And the more I lift the Disco the bigger pain it becomes.

thanks...i agree about facing them inward and not outward. this was a short, in town trip, so i just did a load and go...i have another mod i plan to do the rack itself that will allow me to reclaim about 4 inches of height. i have modified the garage all i can for clearance, so i had to look somewhere else. when i get that done, i will begin adding springs as well.

Hey Mike how did you make the Set up? I have to put mine on top and it is a pain.I was considering something similar but I am afraid the wind would rip them off.

i am pounding on the backyard climbing wall this morning, but will give you the rundown of purchased products, fab products, and modified purchased products later today. i was pretty easy to build. i did it in two very part time days with very little blood.

Michael,
That is an awesome setup! I am truly impressed! I have been wondering how in the heck I am going to transport my kayak now that I have a full antenna cluster up there. I was looking at trailers. Really, really, nice.

Nice set up, but I beleive here in NH, you can not have anything wider than your mirrors....hence the Dually trucks and the wiiiiiide mirrors and the inspection guys checking the width of my Roofrack bars and comparing it to my mirrors....

Just something you might wanna check...

hey rj...

i was wondering about that here too. but being in texas, sometimes things are a little more freewheeling. if i get a ticket, i will let everyone know...;)

i made these so they will be easy to mount/dismount so i will only have trouble when hauling as they will be in the garage for everyday driving.

hey erik...

i will post a photo of the stuff left attached to the lrna rack later tonight when i take the kayak racks off.

the kayak bits are off the shelf thule "J" mounts. i have been trying to figure out how to use them for a while, so i am not sure they are still made. they were built to sit atop thule bars, but i modified them to hang outboard...

bracket.

these brackets are left attached to the lrna rack. there are 2 holes in each bracket that accepts the attachment studs for the preassembled kayak attachment:

kayak stuff.

thanks alan!

the best part is seeing the double (and triple) takes while driving down the road. especially with 4 bikes on top and two yaks on the side!

I like 'em. I wonder if the same would work for a canoe or two?

wow...canoes...

i would think it could be done, but i would use some much beefier hardware for attachments. i was using yakima "snaparounds" for attachment points, but they need a bit of inner tube or such to fill out the lrna tube to yak tube size. if i was going to but much weight out there i would get ahold of kyle and look at his high lift mounts. they seem much more bomber.

mr. lama...

you have not had a real adventure until you travel the backroads of texas flying a gore sticker...!
