So I finally got CDL installed in my 2002 DII after a terrible incident where I rolled my brand new Disco after a failed hill climb. Without CDL and ETC choking, backing down a steep hill is not something I ever plan on doing again.

I have some questions about CDL in general and would love to hear your comments:

Is it wise and OK to lock your center diff whenever you go offroad for the duration of your wheeling? or should it only be locked before a specific obstacle?

What types of obstales do you normally lock your center diff for?

What is the MAX speed that it is safe to drive with CDL engaged?

Is turning affected by a locked Center Diff?

Thanks,
Rob

Rob, as soon as I hit the trails, I lock my center diff, and don't unlock it again until I'm ready for the asphalt. It has never appeared to affect my turning radius. As long as you are on a loose surface, I don't believe that there is a max speed for having the CDL engaged. If there is, then I need to know about it!

I just used my CDL on my 01 DII for the first time last week in Moab and you will love it. I am convinced that CDL is one of the first upgrades you should do on a DII, I locked it when we hit the trail and unlocked it when we were done. I am also not sure if there is a speed that you want to stay under with the CDL engaged, but I would think that it would be the same as a DI.

CDL ROCKS!!!!! I would easily make it up hills that A D1 with a rear TT and CDL had problems with. The stock DI and rangies would have to give it more gas and bump up the obstacles in order to make it up, where I could take a nice slow approach and just crawl up it.

Oh and when I had CDL engaged ETC hardly ever needed to kick in, just for kicks I tried an obstacle with only ETC and it was going off the whole time and I had a hard time making it up it, went back and tried it again with CDL engaged and it crawled up it, I dont even think that ETC had to kick in.

Believer? Hell I am about ready to set out around the country evangelizing CDL : )

I also became a believer in how much the rear bumper sucks on a DII over this trip, my discos fat ass was dragging over everything even with a 3 lift. I crumpled my passenger rear quarter when the bumper was dragging through a gully. GRRRR, time to start looking for rear bumper options for my DII.

Nah, no need for a bumper, just go on easier trails. :)

So Dave, which trails you guys run? Sounds like you had a lot of fun.

Dave, check out my gallery for your bumper problems.

Or better yet, look me up at MAR.

Rob,

As your trail experience accumulates and finessing the ETC becomes instinctive, you will most likely anticipate when CDL needs to be engaged.

I feel the ETC works so well that CDL can simply be used for sections/obstacles on a trail much the way you would switch on an ARB Locker. If fuel range is important, remember full time CDL will burn more petrol.

Max speed with CDL engaged is only limited by your choice of 4L or 4H.

Chu,
I went on Dome Platue, then Kane Creek and one that they called tip toe behind the rocks basically you start out on behind the rocks and before White knuckle, Upchuck and the other large obstacles you turn off and head to the sand dunes. The first set of rock ledges going in to it are a bit challenging, but other than that it was pretty easy considering it was a night run.

Greg,
I Will check out your pics, but I will not be able to make it to MAR : (

Brian,
I think I still have my job, no one called me while I was in Moab. I guess I will know when I go in on tuesday.

Dave,

Good to hear about the evangelist in you! I am betting you dragged ass on that first deep gulley on Kane Creek. I actually get through it unscathed, but the sound ishorrible as I drag my exhaust and hitch. I have heard it on cideo and it does not sound any better:)

The one that I dragged my rear bumper on and bent my rear quarter on was the one with the rock that looked like it wanted to take out the passenger side, then before you get past the rock you drop down into a gully.

A series (109 I think) scraped the rock from the front door all the way to the rear and cut it open like a tin can. DOH
