I have seen this topic on other disco discussion groups regarding the Service Engine Soon Light. I can't find anything apparently wrong. I've check my gas cap, hoses, etc. The dealer says he has to hook it up to the computer to find out why it's coming on. Is this an apparently common problem? If so, does anybody have any suggestions?

"Service Engine" light, the red one, comes on at 52k mi or so to get you to take it in for emmissions maintenence. It's only a timer-tripped light, doesn't mean that anything is wrong.

Just to add to this, you can reset your own light if you want to. The instructions are posted in the "Tech" section of the website here located at

http://www.discoweb.org/reset/index.htm

Why would a dealer say they have to "hook it up to find out what it is" when I, having a Disco for just over a week now, know exactly what it is? :)

Hope this helps,

Kelly,

Is yours a '94-'95 Disco, or is it an OBD-II, ie., post '96 Disco?

Mine is a 2000 DII. It only has 21,000 miles on it. The light that comes on is not the red/amber light. It's the yellow one. It runs fine but it's just annoying to have that light on all the time, you know.

that's the check engine light. needs to be taken to someone with an OBD II code reader. then they can tell you what the issue is. could be a lot of things. just about any garage has one. they can tell you what code # it is.

you can check to see what it is here once you get the code.

Ah!

Sorry, the red "service engine" is for Series I Discos.... my bad.

Yes, a DII, you need to have an OBD-II scanner to check and see what the problem is...

Good luck!

Where do I send the check? :-)

LOL, keep it... unless you have an OBD-II scanner (they are available, BTW, if you'd rather buy one and do it yourself), you'll need it when you visit the dealer.

But, maybe not.... you are still under warranty, at least.....

:)

Good luck!

Hey Leslie,

I have a '95 disco with that damn red "service engine" light on! How can I reset it? Can I do it myself or do I need to go to the dealer with a jar of anal lube??? I tried the '96 disco instructions on here but I couldn't find the little red box they talk about.

Thanx...

JRoc,

Look under you passenger seat near where the LCD screen is. That is where 94/95 service engine light boxes are. Same procedure as the 96 though. Of course, I also tried that about year and a half ago thinking that would turn off my check engine light. Instead, it actually triggered my Service Engine light, and now that is intermittently on. I have taken the box apart, placed paper clips, screw drivers, most anything between the two contacts, and the damn light just won't go out. Interesting too, cause it is not dependent on the engine being on so much as it is on actually forward or reverse momentum. I can sit, and rev the engine and the light will be off, but as soon as I roll forward, it comes on. And it will sometimes blink in time with the blinkers or even wind shield wipers. Just gotten used to it, and have the steering wheel set right at the perfect spot so as to hide the light from me. Damn Lucas.

Hey Robbie,

You ROCK!!! I went outside to the truck, just to see what you were talkin about. I got excited cuz I found the little red box, so I came back inside and got a paper clip and went back outside. I straightened out the paper clip and stuck it in the little hole, she had been reset before I bought her. I didn't feel any resistance so I was a little apprehensive but when I turned her back on the light was gone! Like magic! I don't know if I can get it back on that clip that holds it inplace, but it's reset. It must've took all of 15 seconds! Thanx a bunch and hope someone else reads this and does it!

Disco's Back! I never thought I'd say this but, Long Live Disco!!! LOL

Glad it worked for you JRoc. Always nice when you end up being able to do little things like that yourself.
