My friend Luke started a 4x4 modification shop about a year ago (although he has been doing it for years). Once I got my Disco we started coming up with mods for him to make and we decided to start with a new rear bumper as those are his speciality. You can check out some of his other bumpers at 4x4labs.com. Many of the bumpers on his web site are old as he doesn't have much time to keep the web site current.

We worked all last week on my bumper and it is nearly complete. Here are some pictures of us working on the bumper. Please note the pictures are missing a bunch of components such as the side protection and all the skid plates. Since Luke is a hard core rock crawler, he is designing the bumper like a tank that will allow the entire rear of the Disco to be dropped and skid of rocks. The sides will be 12" high and then have skid plates that protrude under the cut rear quarter panels 12". The gas tank will also be completly protected. The exhaust will be cut and re-routed up and out the side of the bumper. Once everything is complete the bumper will be sand blasted and powder coated black.

Disco II Rear Bumper Features:
1/4" Steel construction
LED Blinkers and rear fog lights
Gas tank skid plate
Rear quarter panel protection
Rear side skid plates

Rob,
Great job.

If you don't mind my asking, what did you do with yor old bumper,...more precisely, what did you do with the lights?

If you have them and would like to get rid of them, please drop my an email.

Carl

Carl - I think I will keep the bumper and lights in case I ever sell my Disco and want to keep the bumper.

I have had to replace rear lights from hitting the bumper hard while off road. They are pretty reasonable in cost. I think about $35 each.

Cool bumper Rob - make sure to show the finished product.

Rob, that looks really good. Is it boxed at all, or does the strength come from the bends? Just curious.

Not sure what you mean by boxed. However there is 1/4" and 3/8" thick reinforcing plates on the inside. Once I get the completed bumper I'll take a bunch of pictures of everything including the mounts.

Hopefully it will be ready in the next 2 weeks and I can make the trek up to Grass Valley to get it.

Rob, what I meant was are there four sides to your bumper, meaning are all of the sides enclosed, or is it folded steel with an open side on the rear and inner sides?

XXXX

XXXX
XOOO
XOOO
XXXX

If looking at the channels from the end, do they look like the first figure or the second? The "O"'s represent open space (only way I could get it to show up properly).

Greg, are you sending secret love notes again?

(ps I still haven't done my lift yet)

Greg.. It is not 4 sided like option 1.

It's more like

XXXX
XXOO
XOXO
XXXX

3 Sides and additional structural plates welded on the inside.

I think we are both on the same page.

I had the same question as Greg. If I am reading the drawing correctly, this creates a triangulated structure roughly where it is needed the most. Very interesing and must have taken some thought to do it right.
