Oops. Sorry folks. Posted below message in wrong place. --------------------------- Hi folks. New to this site; very informative. I'm from Canada and have a 98 Disco that I'm looking to have the tires replaced. Wanted to pick your brains on some decent all around tires. I do go off-road (as far as going through rivers, mud bogs, backcountry areas) but not frequently. My Disco is used for commuting and basic regular driving but I also want something that I can just turn off the pavement and go and will do the job relatively well. I've been doing some research and BFG AT TA KOs seem to have a lot of support but I've heard they're not so great in mud (tires slick up pretty quick). I'm also looking at Bridgestone Dueler ATs and Goodyear Wrangler ATs. What do you guys think or is there something else you can recommend. Good for winter too would be nice (lots of snow up here and relatively long winters). Some people were suggesting going to MT tires but that seems to be over-kill since I don't go all the time. Also makes a lot of noise too. Thanks a bunch. Al |

Hey Al, You have a good selection of tires there but just to confuse you further, I was in the same boat as you and came up with a tire that's not even on your list. Dunlop R/T Radial Rovers 235/85/16. I have a OME lift with 2" spacers. I moved the rear quarter panel ala "Kyle's method". This is on a '95 Disco. I dare anyone to come up with a better all around performer for under $100! Dry, Rain, Snow, Mud, it's good in everything, Not great, but good. Personally I think in order to get great performance in specific conditions you need a tire specific to those conditions (ie: mud tires for mud, snow tires for snow, etc.). I'm probably going to get a dedicated mud setup (tires and rims) for the sloppy stuff and change out only when I expect it to be real shitty! Til then I've got a good tire for all around performance and if one shits the bed I'll just get another. PS. 235/85/16 Dunlop R/T's delivered to my house in NY from Tire Rack under $100/tire. Gotta love em!!! |

Hi Jroc, Thanks for the info. Ya, I figure eventually I'll buy a set of steel wheels and a set of actual off-road tires that I can swap out for serious stuff like what you were saying. I had a Pathfinder before my Disco that I put Bridgestone Desert Duellers on and I loved them but Bridgestone doesn't make the Desert Duellers anymore with the same tread pattern. They've toned it down a bit so now I'm looking around. There's a lot of different opinions so it's kinda difficult to narrow it down. Thanks for the info on the Dunlops. I'll have a look at them. In the mean time, I welcome anyone else's comments. Al |

I run BFG MTs everywhere and I love 'em, but they break your $100 price. John www.teampb.com |

Also consider the Yoko Geolander AT Plus II's. Very good on the street and has a pretty aggressive tread for an all-terrain. They've taken me plenty of places where people with M/T's didn't make it. Clean out fairly well in mud, too. I paid $110 each for my 285's, so they're a pretty good deal as well. |

I've also been running the Geolander AT Plus IIs over the last year or so and have been very happy with the performance and durability both on and off road. They are quieter than the stock Michelins that came with the truck (95) on the road. The tread pattern provides a good balance for the conditions I off-road in which are rock, hardpack, and mud. They are great on the hard stuff and are livable in the mud. You always get a mixture of all three here so you need a good overall tire. For the winter months I've been using the winter version of the stock Michelin (alpine? - can't remember for sure - they're buried in my basement). The sidewall is a little weaker than I would like but they do a great job both on and off road. |

I'll third the reccomendation of the Yoko Geo AT+. Cooper STT is another good one under 100 bucks. Neil |

Just about any non-mud-specific tire will slick up pretty quick in heavy mud. Personally, I think the dedicated "Mud" tires are too noisy and soft for someone doing the vast majority of their driving on-road. I'd go with Bridgestone AT's if I could afford it. I've continually heard the raves about the Radial Rover RT's too, and will probably put those on my '89 Trooper, but that is a dedicated weekend truck... no road trips to worry about. |

Hey guys, Thanks for the info. I'll go have a look at the other ones you guys mentioned. Hey any of you guys that have Series I Discos ever put 245/70/R16 on your truck? The specs say put only 235/70/R16 but I can't see 10mm larger making that much difference. There's isn't any tire rubbing is there? Keep in mind my truck is stock so it's not raised at all beyond what it already is. Al |
