New owner of 97 TDi, 62000 miles. Whilst fitting a new CD changer under LH/passenger seat I found the footwell to be soaking wet. On removal of carpets found a corroded bolt/plate which would appear to be part of the fitting for the mudflap. Water must come up from the road and force its way past the "unsealed" plate. Any tips or advice on repair or replacement would be appreciated. Bas. |

Basil, Are you sure it is the plate? Disco's are prone to other defects in that area. The a/c can leak into that footwell also there was a bulliten put out about a leak through the windscreen area. |

The foam underlay is only wet "below" the plate, not above, and the plate is corroded. After drying it out (3 days)the footwell is still dry, and I have only driven on dry roads. The plate seems to be secured with three blind bolts inserted from the inside, with nuts securing the mudflap bracket on the outside. The centre bolt and the plate surrounding it is corroded/rusted, which is where I reckon the water is getting in. I have not yet had the time to complete a full investigation, I hoped it was a known problem which had a straightforward, and cheap, fix. Regards. Bas. |

Basil, Do what I did: 1) take out all seats and carpet; 2) prep surface; 3) Herculine the floors (use whatever brand you like, but I found Herculiner to be the best) 4) put carpet and seats back in; 5) never worry about interior rust again. Total cost: $100 for Herculiner (K-Mart) and approx. $20 for sundries. Worth every penny. -Marc |

It was a weekend job, but that is mostly because of drying time. Herculiner is a two-coat process and you have to wait a few hours between coats. All-in-all, I would say I spent 10-12 hours on it. Things take me longer than most people, though. For example, it took me 2 days to install OME springs, shocks and steering damper (but that was my first-ever DIY auto project). If you are considering it, e-mail me and I will give you whatever tips I can. No need to bore everyone with that. |

A/C drains: There are two, one each side from the gearbox, bottom view. You will see two gum drains. You can disassemble the ends and clean them. Be carefully and keep your eyes far from the cube of water mixed with dust you will receive, specially from the passenger side. time for this job: 10 minutes frecuency to do: each year Good luck! |
