I just went to a local 4wheel parts shop go get some light covers for some hella black magic lights that came with a used roof rack I just got.... I was told the hella black magic lights don't need and don't come with covers. Is this true? I'm in California and though you were required to cover overhead lights on a roof rack or light bar when on road.
Does anyone know what the regulations are?
Thanks,
Dave

I cover them just so they don't catch a pebble and shatter...uncover for the night trail run

Don't forget to uncover before lighting them up. The covers will warp and you'll be back in the store buying new ones...

Thanks for the advise-
I agree with Blue's comment- I think I'll call around and find some covers regardless of the regs.

you know what? there are also clear shatterproof stone shields (lexan?) that you can mount onto the light and just leave in place - then you don't have to remove a black & white cover before you turn the light on. I like the black & white covers, so that's what I go with...but clear shields are also good option.

Hey Dave,

The Black Magic Hella's are the same size as 1000's. When searching just ask for the stone shields for Hella 1000's. AB sells em for $12.95 each but I'm sure you can find em alot cheaper. As always, check with Nathan he knows all! LOL

i did what blue said. my hella 2000's are fitted with thin lexan covers. used metal twine threaded through small holes in the lexan to attach them.
by law most states do require they be covered, but i have had no isses, nor do i see them having an issue with them. well unless they see me lighting up the back of someone who just pulled out in front of me.

You know, I was curious about the height of forward facing lights too. Yesterday on the way to work, I saw this huge behemoth coming out of a snowy blindness with blindingly bright headlights on top of the vehicle.

Turned out to be a highway department truck! Also, how do those fellas with snowplows get away with their headlights mounted four feet off the road even when they're not plowing snow?
