I purchased four Infinity 4 inchers for the doors and pillars. The speakers didn't fit in the front doors but did in the back just fine. What's the secret for the front(rumor has it they should fit)? would anyone install that has Infinitys in the front doors know? I purchased two 6.5 inchers for the subwoofer/door mount. These fit fine. I had to remove the amp from the back and place it in the door cavity. I tried several different wiring options and it just seems like it should be louder. I think it's wired wrong. There are 4 wires from the amp. 2 black and 2 black/white striped. Is there a secret to the subs? I think they use a floating ground or common ground but I'm not sure. Can anyone provide how they have connected up 6.5s in the door? I'm not going for competition sound I just had a few bad speakers and decided to replace them all. I don't need anything crazy.
Thanks in advance!

Jack,

This is just my opinion, and I'm no professional, but I think your 6.5 subs MAY be designed for a high wattage system and the stock amp just isn't powerful enough. When buying speakers you should match them to the output of either your head unit or the amplifier, whichever you'll be using to power them. As far as the front doors, don't even get me started on this! The mounting depth is ridiculous!!! Every speaker I tried mounting in there was too deep. I even cut out some of the baffling and still didn't get much more room. I finally went with a Rockford Fosgate 4" component setup. The difference between regular speakers (full range) and components (seperate midrange and tweeters)in case you don't know. I didn't need to go with components up front because of the mounting being up so high on the door, but I found a speaker that fit and just used it. I like the Rockfords very since listening to them now for a while. I even like them more than the Infinity Kappas I have in the rears, also 4". There's only so much sound one can expect from a 4" speaker! In retrospect, I wish I would've went with a larger speaker in the rear, something like a 6 1/2 or 6 3/4. I would've had to do a little cutting of the sheet metal but I know it would've given the rear a lot more mids and highs. Good Luck and hope this helped. Oh and get it dirty!

The front doors just lack clearance, you can likely do some trimming to make them fit but you are better off locating a speaker with a shallow mounting depth. Best to measure your stock 4" speakers and try to match that. Jroc is correct about matching speakers to amps to some extent. Most aftermarket equipment will work ok together but OEM stock equipment is another story. They do often match speaker to amps. By "match" I am referring to the impedence or ohms of the speaker. Most aftermarket speakers are 4 ohms. Some of the stock stereo systems are 8 ohms or even higher and if you put a 4 ohms speaker on the stock amp it may not be able to handle that amount of load and could overheat or blow the outputs. Also, stock speakers are usually more efficient so that they will play louder with less power applied. I believe the speakers in the rear door are "crossed over" to only play low frequencies so if you put a regular 2-way speaker in there it won't play the high frequencies and will therefore sound quiet except for some bass and if the speaker is not as efficient as the stockers they won't be as loud. In reference to your questioning if it is wired correctly, make sure that both of the woofers in the rear door are wired with positive to positive and negative to negative. In other words, if one is the opposite of the other they will cancel each other out and you will loose a lot of volume.

That one sort of ran on didn't it.

Thanks all. After much consideration, I believe that I'm going to shit can the whole factory system. I listened to it on the way to work. With the exception of bass, the system sounds clear and crisp.

It took me all of two days of owning a disco to send the entire factory system to the city dump. It is extremely easy to put 6.5s in the rear corners, I used seperates and mounted a tweeter below it ( it looks factory and not to mention sweet). In the front I decided the English must hate music as much as they hate beverages in their vehicles. I left the factory 4s and clipped their power. I then took off the factory map pockets and I custom made ( with plywood covered with vinyl) new panels where the map pockets were. I then was able to put in 6.5s in the front also a seperate. I had the factory tweeters in the front so I removed them from the pillar and was able to put in my aftermarket. The radio is now an Alpine that runs my complete audio system. I put the amps in the back and put in two 10's with quick disconects, to remove for extra space from time to time. This is very easy to do. Not counting all the speakers and such the custom panels on the door cost me like $80 and that was just because the vinyl was so expensive. Carpet would be cheaper but I wanted the look. By the way the front door speakes are low so if you plan on doing a lot of wading I would recommend a boat speaker.

Aaron, how about some photos of what you did? I own a stereo shop as well as my 95 Disco and always like new ideas. Needless to say there isn't much left of the stock stereo in my Disco and what's left won't last much longer. I use the Disco for demo'ing product so it's always under construction in the stereo department.

Jack, I have four 4" rockfords in my disco. The front doors are shallow, so I removed a little of the transparent plastic lining in there. Also, I had to rotate the speake a little because it didnt seem to fit in right side up (the wires were too tight at the bottom). I even had a short because of a wire touching ground. Since fixed, it works great and sounds even better. The stock unit & CD sounds really good. I doubt spending the extra cash for a completely new system would be worth it.

I have everything installed now. I took a pair of the 4" back and traded for Infinity 3.5". These fit fine. I think that the amp powering the 6.5" comes and goes. While driving to the store last night, it must have kicked in. I was amazed at the sound. My goal now is just to possibly replace the amp in the door and add a BassLink 10" in place of a storage bin. This should be it. It is more simple and affordable.
Thanks.

Well...since we're throwing out ideas. I went with MB Quart 4 inch seperates in the front. The mid fits when you use the supplied mounting kit and the tweeter will drop in the a-pillar with some silicone. I stuck an AudioControl x-over under the steering colum for easy access to the controls. In the rear pillars I stuck with MB Quart. I gutted the pillar and stuck in a 5 inch mid, dynamat, and insulation. In the storage pockets rest my Pheonix Gold ZX475 on the right and an Accuvolt and cap on the left. For bass I am using an Eclipse aluminum 12 in a 2 cu ft ported enclosure. I also have an Eclipse head unit. All wire is Moster Cable. I'll post pics in my gallery as soon as I get it set up!

Jack, I'm thinking of replacing the barely noticable rear door speakers, their paper cones are tearing from dry rot, with a a pair of Blaupunkts I have sitting in the garage. What can I do about the mounting of the amp (it screws into the back of the stock speakers) Is there a replacement amp for the rear door? I asssume it shouldnt need much power as it only feeds the two rear door speakers.

Bill, I removed the amp from the back of the speakers (2 bolts). I placed the amp down into the door cavity and connected it to the new speakers. As for a replacement amp, I would guess that any aftermarket amp would do.
