people say don't do it

the oil messes up the mass air flow sensor by clogging it

and it lets bigger dirt particles in when off road or in a dusty enviroment

there was another thread like this and it made me go and buy a 3 dollar one from a parts store and sell mine on ebay.

the gains don't out weigh the risks

Hi Norm,

Just a (slightly) related/unrelated story. Last year I replaced my stock filter on my '02 bmw 330i with the K&N. About 2 months later, I developed bad hesitation problems. I made an appointment to have the car checked, as it was fairly unusable. I did place the stock filter back in (just in case).

It turned out to be the throttle body was fouled with oil, and the dealer wanted to know specifically, if I used a K&N.... So, it might have just been my filter, but it must have been waaay over-oiled @ the factory.

Of course, with a Disco compared to the bimmer, your "milage" may vary...

BTW, just got a '01 DII SE7 on Monday! So, first post, and Hi everyone!

I had the same hesitation problem as Larry with my 95 DI and my MAF finally gave up a few weeks ago. A mechanic who worked on my rig in July told me my MAF was coated with oil and that there was far to much oil on my K&N (straigh out of the box). He suggested I get rid of it before it caused me problems down the line.......I changed back to paper in August, but the damage had already been done. Expensive lesson!!!

I have a 92 BMW 325I, with the K&N filter for about 20k miles. 96 Disco with K&N filter with about 4k miles, no hesitation or any other problems. Its, tough for a company to last this long, if there were some issues. Bottom Line, If you don't feel comfortable don't do it.

Landrover's been making oil leaking cars for quit some time; but people still buy them.

Norm,

I've put a K&N in my 96 Disco for the only reason that this was the only air filter i could buy on a weekend.

about 50kmi later - the engine runs all right, but the top of the air cleaner housing is coated with a very fine dust, and so is the MAF intake. Cleaning and re-oiling the K&N is a toss-up with the Disco, because you can indeed ruin the MAF sensor.

As far as K&N torque/horsepower gain claims go, there were none on any of the vehicles I had them on (4.0 LR V8, 5.9 AMC V8, 2.5 Jeep I4, 4.0 Ford V6, what else?). None. One reason to have it on the big jeep was that K&N filters are reportedly water-proof, the surface tension of the oiled mesh keeps the water out. Is it enough to overcome the engine vacuum? don't know, and don't want to find out.

so, while I am not sure that K&N really belong in the Kyle's window, I'm not buying any more.

Thanks for the great responses I heard some issues regarding oil on the MAF sensor. I also have a 91 BMW 525i with a K&N and no problems, you must however not to over do it when reoiling the filter. At this point its a toss up, I have a stick in the BMW and there is some gain and this great gasp of air when you floor it.

Thanks again

Heck, I just bought one. I thought that I was doing my Rover a favor. Should I trash it now (ouch) or just trash it when it needs to be re-oiled?

Thanks...

BMW has had a void warrenty situation with K&N filters for years.

the MAF/hot wire failures are well known and guys in the hot rod world pull them out and clean the hot wire's on a regualr basis to prevent the wire from getting fried.

adding this extra maintenance to a allready high maintenance rig just dosent make sence.

and if you lose some filtration as well then its really a stupid idea.
