so i had an intersting thing happen to my 95 disco. about 18 months ago i had the two front rotors and brake pads replaced. reciently i began to hear the tell tail, metalic scraping noise of brake pads on rotors... so i figured the rear pads must have gone bad. to my dismay, it turns out the front passenger side, inside pad had prematurely worn down. the weird thing was that the three other front pads were about equal in wear. so i called my local shop (who i have trusted up till now) i told him about the "wierd pad wear" and the guy told me that i need to have the calipers serviced ($495.00) and that one pad wearing down faster then the others is a sure sign that this needs to be done. they arent leaking, pulsing, pulling or otherwise so i kind of doubted this... am i being bull shitted??? my gut feeling was that the inside pad must have been a bad pad and it just prematurely wore out... has anyone else heard this/had to have their calipers repaired, because of premature wear on one pad??? including the brake job its going to cost an arm and a leg ($615 for the brake job, $495 for the caliper job... ouch!!!!!) |

I had the inside piston stick and wear out that one pad. You most likely could get a GOOD brake shop to fix the piston. |

so its true... i gotta get bent over for $500, has anyone ever done this repair themselves? is it worth it to pay someone or can a "home mechanic" type fix it |

That sounds like a part defect to me, and should be covered under the part's warrantee. If the piston stuck when they gave it to you, it's defective! However, 18 months is a long time. It very easily could have gotten stuck recently, and I don't think you have any way of proving it either way. I know you can get replacement pistons and seals, probably from DAP or GBR. You could also probably get a whole new caliper for less than that price. |

You can easily remove your calipers and inspect the pistons & seals. Same goes for replacing pads & rotors. In an ideal world, all four front pistons push equally on each pad (2 pistons per side on each front caliper). However, it's not uncommon to have one or two pistons pushing a little harder than others. You just gotta watch that pad wear - get a small flexible light and you can easily check pad wear with the truck parked and tires still on. Where are you located? Piston corrosion is not uncommon, especially if you're in snowy areas or on the coast. |

I picked up my new seal kit from Nathan at Discount Rovers. Job was a piece of cake.

One must be careful when approaching this particular problem. I recently replaced a caliper on a '94 Disco as there had obviously been a problem with brake fluid flow to the outer side of the caliper (Or, MAJOR corrosion!). The pistons had moved so far out of their bore that the pistons had become cocked and couldn't be easily pushed back, necessitating a replacement caliper. In this case, the rotor was worn so badly that it cracked in four of five places. The replacement caliper was sourced from a due to time constraints and surprisingly only cost $275.00 with overnight shipping. Again, the Rover is the easiest vehicle I have ever worked on! The brake line unbolted from the caliper easily and the hydraulic system was bled in all of 30 seconds, pedal feel was great and the owner drove away happily. My imperial flare wrenches even fit the pipe fittings! Paul |

HEY blue, your pic points to the two bolts that hold the caliper on... i just looked at them and they are FUNKY... what are they called and what size are they. can i buy this kind of bolt at the local auto parts store and what do i call it... i doubt "funky" is what the parts guy will understand thanks |

are they 12-point star bolts? I honestly don't remember. may need 12-point socket or closed-end wrench to fit it... Paul, you couldn't just re-seat the pistons? Note: if pistons are corroded, they should be replaced. My whole issue was just a bad seal (note the gunk everywhere) this may not hit your pocketbook that hard. My job cost me a few bucks for seal kit and a bottle of brake fluid. more pics:

scubaman - the bolts are 12 point - 14mm ( I think - can't remember right now) shoulder bolts with a very fine thread. I don't think you'll find them anywhere except from a LR parts dealer or a junkyard. Oh yeah - they're also 8.8 or 10.9 (ie: higher than SAE grade 8). Why would you need to replace them anyway - just curious? Bill |

most closed end wrenches are 12-point and I think Bill's right about 14mm |

What about Stainless replacement pistons? Anyone know a source for these for Disco's? I know there are services that will machine the OD of your fautly piston and fit a stainless sleeve, but I'd like to have new stainless pistons in hand, before removing the caliper... Tom P 96 Disco |

okay dumb question... maybe im missing something... i didnt see any leakage anywhere from my brake pistons... And to my suprise, i was able to take compress the pistons back in to their bore... so do i really have "stuck caliper piston"? |

doesn't sound like it maybe just uneven pad wear or bad pad, although I never heard of bad pads. How much thickness do you have left on the other pads? |

about 1/8 of an inch... i had the front pads replace a while ago. the strange thing is that all three (both drivers side pads) and the outside passenger pad are all pretty much even... just for whatever reason the inside passenger side pad is gone.... this really pisses me off cause i replaced the passenger side rotor at the same time... so i have a "newer" rotor that is shot now because of this. |

1/8" - that's cutting it close...too close, apparently...pads are cheaper to replace than rotors. |

1/8" ouch - still if you have uneven wear like that, one side of the caliper has to be acting up - what happens when you have the caliper off (w/pads still in) and someone presses the brake pedal? Bill |

those are all the photos I have. For some reason, my wife wanted to use my digital camera to take pictures of our baby's second Christmas, and not my brake job. step by step instructions come with the seal kit. It's really just a matter of replacing seals and the cups they fit into, then waxing on and waxing off. Tedious, but pretty simple. P.S. Are you THE Ralph Maccio? |
