Hey all,

I'm looking to see how long the Discos motors last, if there are any certain years I should stay away from and if one transmission is better than the other (is the manual stronger than the auto). I'm coming from a long line of jeeps so this is a huge switch...are they as easy to work as the jeeps?

I'm going back to school and need something to haul my photo gear around in that won't cost a ton (under 10k).

Also, I really like the look of the new Discos flares, can I put those on older models?

Thanks alot!

Justin

Mileage isn't really an issue...just maintenance. I'm in school now, and my '94 disco has 140,000 miles on it and runs perfectly. its all in the maintenance...keep with it, and you'll be fine aside from occasional items like a radiator or brakes that just happen but can be caught if you keep an eye and ear out for problems once you have it. Mine came with a two inch thick binder of records from original. I'm the third owner, and wouldn't trade it for anything. NO leaks, ever, and runs great and goes like hell to anywhere.

Some say that the engines are good for about 250K with nothing but regular maintenance, but then, things like the cams start to wear necessitating replacement. Mine has more than 150K on it and is driven about 100 miles everyday to/from work. Doesn't burn oil and really doesn't leak much oil any more. Whistles something awful, but runs well and strong.

Some of the early 4.0s had issues with the valves.

The manual transmissions apparently start to have problems around 70K miles. Most of the guys with D-90s have had to replace at least the output shaft (or is it the input shaft?). But, they seem to be fairly uncommon in NAS (North American Spec) trucks.

Easy to work on as Jeeps? Might be easier. Also, surprisingly, in some cases, some of the parts might actually be cheaper if you search for the American made counterparts-the front wheel bearings are the same as John Deere Tractors! Many of the other parts were sourced from GM and are easily available in the states at a fraction of the cost of OEM parts.

You should be able to find a '94-'96 Disco for around $10K. Personally, I prefer the pre-'96 as I have an affinity for distributors and can easily understand them and work on them, but the post '95 have a more sophisticated on-board diagnostic system making troubleshooting much easier and cheaper.

I'm the 8th owner of my truck and at times I question if any of the former owners ever opened the bonnet. That said, so far,I have really only had to replace minor parts with the exception of the radiator, but again, they're so damned easy to work on it isn't an issue.

Real easy to work on...good thing, too!
So far in the 2.5 years I have owned it I have put in 5 alternators, 4 injectors, 1 clutch, 6 sets of brakes, all new seals, 1 stepper motor, 4 sets of plugs, and 2 sets of plug wires.
If I keep going I will have a brand new truck soon.

Greg French, How much do you want for it?

just to throw some fuel onto this fire, i have a 94 with 148,000. it uses about .750 to 1 qt of oil between changes. i travel alomst a hundred miles a day back and forth to work, five and sometimes six days a week. so it comes down to caring for your ride regularly, which is done here, so buy and enjoy, oh the one complaint is 13 mpg, but its a Land Rover!
