I have a 95 Discovery and it's running poorly. The check engine light has been on for some time but it has just recently started running poorly and has significant loss of power between 2000 and 2500 rpm. Does anyone have any thoughts on this? I am trying to find a place to diagnose it, but I am not sure if it is an OBD-I or OBD-II. If anyone can tell me this, or has any ideas on why it might have started running poorly, your help would be much appreciated! Thanks, Kyle J |

it's OBD I. pep boys or any place with a scan tool can give you the code read outs. |

Or, since your Check Engine light is on, and it is a 95/OBDI, just look under your passenger seat. A little black screen under there should have your trouble code in red digital numbers. Then check what the code means. |

It might be an OBDI, or it might be an OBD II. Rover began introducing the GEMS and OBD-II engines in late MY '95. There is a tag on the radiator surround that indicates the diagnostic status. The other way to determine the OBD status is to look for a distributor. If your truck has a distributor, it is OBD-I. If no distributor, it is OBD-II. If it is OBD-I, I'm afraid that your options are limited to either going to the dealership to read codes, or use the limited readout capabilities in the truck. In my experience, the readout box is worthless. I have only once had the readout display a code and it was not the problem the vehicle was having. FWIW, I'm not any more impressed with the dealer's testbook, or the Autologic as they don't always do the job. Now, onto why it is running poorly (something I don't think anybody has addressed), what is the state of tuneof your engine? Plugs, wires, cap/rotor (if equipped with a distributor), fuel filter? Does it seem to be engine speed related? How about vehicle speed related? How many miles on the truck? Paul |

Thank you for the info everyone! Paul, I read the code under the seat and it was code 34: Injector bank A...any idea of what that means? Plugs, wires, cap, and rotor have not been done for a while...perhaps this would help. I am not sure about the state of the fuel filter. The vehicle currently has 72,000 miles. I notice that it runs especially poor when I am about 45mph in the 2000-2500 rpm range, so I am guessing it is engine speed related. Any Ideas? Thanks for your help! Kyle J |

Injector Bank A could mean a few things. At 72,000 miles, it COULD be O2 sensor. First things to do are the least expensive! Let us put a new set of plugs, wires, cap and rotor and see what happens. Even if you end up needing an O2 sensor (which I'm doubtful of), you would need to do the above mentioned things anyway soon, and the cost of all of the above should run you less than a single OEM O2 sensor. BTW- you can get the rotor/cap at Advance or Autozone (or even NAPA). Plug wires-Magnecor is the only way to go. Now, I'll get flamed for this, but I use Autolite #65 spark plugs-hey, they are cheap! The light didn't come on at about 50K miles did it? Have you done the emissions reset dance? Paul |
