What does it usually mean and how bad is it if a 3.9 is making slight lifter noise. This is in a '90 Range Rover. Could it be that cam walk I've heard of? |

Anyone? I'm having a friend look at this truck for me tomorrow morning. It's 2000km away. The owner said "it makes very slight lifter noise but I've been told this is normal for these engines". It only has 80,000km on it. Sounds strange to me but I have no experience with these engines. |

Could be cam walk in the old 3.9 (as opposed to the 3.9 "B" from '95 on). I think they had a fix for cam knock on the original 3.9s by gluing a plastic "button" on the inside of the front cover that made contact with the cam shaft to keep it from "walking." Otherwise, the noise could be a lot of things. If you can get a mechanic's stethescope you might be able to trace the problem. Otherwise, you can remove the valve covers and check out the upper valve gear while it's idling. |
