I was originally looking to buy a 1996-1997 discovery but have seen what appears to a good deal on two 1995s. From a few web sites that sell parts it appears that the 1996 model has a newer engine from the 1995? Is this true and if so is the engine any better, other then the fact that it may have less miles on it cause it is newer? Also are there any other major design differnces from the 1995 to 1996 or 1997 that I should be aware of. Thanks so much for any help. |

I have a '95 and if I was going to go by a used vehicle I would buy as new as possible, newer vehicles should have better reliability (some say) and in general has fewer miles. |

Richard, the 94-95 had a 3.9L, the 96-99 have a 4.0. I own a '96 with 120k on the motor, still running strong. I've heard of lots of people with valve problems with the 4.0, and haven't heard that much about the 3.9. The 3.9 has a distributor, the 4.0 doesn't. I personally would definitely check out the vehicles history, was it serviced by the dealer? etc... These vehicles are definitely not for the faint of heart when it comes to repairs, especially if you don't do them yourself. I've been lucky as to only go to the dealer once for service, and I about jumped the counter when I got my bill, at least they washed it though.. Later.. Robert |

Richard, I have had both a 95 and a 96. There is no real comparison. The 96 is so much better, it is like a different car alltogether. The 95 was a whorebatious pig. pk |

the 3.9L and the 4.0 are the exact same size engines, however the 4.0 has a different crankshaft (again, still the same stroke). Already mentioned, the 4.0 uses the GEMS ignition system while the 3.9 uses a standard vacuum-advance distributor. The cams are also different (same duration, different lobe centers), probably giving the 4.0 the extra hp (about 10...). I own a '95 and I don't see how an extra 10 hp would make my Disco any less sluggish (hey, the dyno-pants don't lie). |
