Just had the tires rotated at 15K mi. on '01 Disco. That and oil change were all that was done. Now between 5mph and 15mph there is a fairly loud growl and some viration with it. Goes away above 20mph. Dealer says it's just that the tires are feathered - a common problem on Disco's. Does this seem like a reasonable explanation? Feels more like wheel bearings, differential - Any thoughts are welcome. Ron |

If you are running m/t tires that have blocky treads on the outside of the pattern and if you have uneven ware accross the tread pattern when you rotate the tire the pattern becomes latteraly flipped and you will tend to run on high part of the treads rather than on the worn down portion. My 1995 ranger with the IFS in front is bad for that and when you drive slow on pavement you tent to ride into the groves and onto the lugs more and there is where you get the vibration from. I use to realy notice it when braking just before comming to a stop. rt |

It's probably a problem with your wheel bearings, especially if the growl increases as you turn corners. |

Wheel bearings on a new Disco with only 15K on it? I certainly hope not. If it is bad bearings, boy, am I glad I have a '95! Paul |

Have you rotated your tires faithfully? If not, the tires could definitely be feathered or chopped enough to cause what you're describing. Noise in the wheel bearings would tend to increase a bit when cornering, and as speed increased, and I doubt that at 15K, you have an issue with them. The tires on my '00 have about 28K on them so far, and are definitely feathering a bit (PO didn't rotate faithfully, although they did rotate in the spare), and I get some road noise out of them to about 35. Then things smooth out. No vibes, to speak of, tho. HTH |

Yeah, I'd think that it's the tires.... swap 'em back and see if it goes away. If so, then you know they hadn't been rotated often enough. Oh, was the psi adjusted? Remember that the psi of the fronts is supposed to be lower than the rear..... FWIW... -L |

IF those are the stock Michelins like the D1's came with, they DO have a high tendency to feather rapidly, every disco I've ever seen with those tires has had feathering on them, or cupping...I am going to say that its the tire not the truck because my Dunlop mud rovers have worn perfectly unlike the Michelins. I don't really know about the Goodyears that D2's have though. |
