Well, convinced the wife that new tires were in order (after all, the stock tires had almost 9k on them.) Called around to the local Goodyear dealers, and one stood out with by far a lower price on what I was looking for - MT/R's slightly larger than the stock size, 255x70x16 instead of the 65's. Interesting now, my speedo (according to the GPS) is absolutely right on, whereas with the stock 255x65's it read about 7% fast. This leads me to believe that the 70's should have been on the 2001 from the start - and the MT/R's sure look fantastic compared to the 'street' tires the Disco came with. My only thought is that maybe I could have gone with 75's, but naw, I've got to pull a camper sometimes, and was concerned with ratio on the steep uphills. The MT/R's are surprisingly quiet, I'll find out how they do on the old 'potato road' outside of Las Vegas tomorrow (over the Spring Mtns). -John F. 2001 SD |

It's not uncommon for vehicles to overstate their vehicle speed a bit. I'm not sure why. On the stock tires, my D1 would be going 65 (according to my GPS) when my speedo says 70. With the 245/75/R16s, my speedo is only off 1 mph at 70. Thanks, Mike B. |

The MT/R's performed unbelievably well this morning. No wheel spin in places I always spun with the stock tires. The rough limestone didn't chew up the tread blocks (just a tiny knick here and there). Very worthwile. Next question - I didn't buy a fifth (uh, tire that is). If I do get a flat, will I cause any damage getting home with one tire that is slightly smaller rolling diameter than the other three? If this does happen, would 'airing down' the three MTR's help? I'd take it easy on the way home, of course. Thanks... -John F 2001 Disco |

John, Where did you go to test the tires out? I live on the southwest side of Vegas at the base of the mountains. |

John, It's not a good idea to drive with a smaller tire then the rest. Get the 5th one so that you have a full size spare. |

I second what Eric said. It wreaks havoc on the diff. |

wreaks havoc might be a little strong...it makes heat in the diff that will cause a shortened life of the fluid. if you do run with mismatched tires I would increase pressure in the smaller one to max rec.pressure and maybe drop a few in the taller ones. but I would never run really low pressure to match them. hate to have a tire failure rollover to save a diff. then when you get home change the diff fluid . also I would stop and check the diff for heat after driving awhile to see if it is heating up. I have seen guys drive home with other guys tires(some times a lonnnnnng way) because they ripped up 2 of there tires at the same time. and only once when the guy had a very contaminated diff did someone have problems. |

Sorry. Got a little over-dramatic there. But it certainly doesn't do the diff any favors. |

Guses I'll buy a fifth after all, then stop at the tire store... Wes, did you get the email about the trip location? It is Willow Springs Road at the far end of the Red Rock loop, all the way over down into Lovell Canyon. Of course, a stop a Mt. Springs bar on the way back around is always in order... -John Friederich Las Vegas, NV |
