why not just buy a high lift and some chain. then you can use it as a jack and winch. Best of both worlds. Bill Burk has a excellent write up about this at http://www.d-90.com/tech/index.html. Todd |

I made a kit up using a Hi-Lift Jack and chain. It works really well and it's cheap. You only need a short length of chain, chain snigs, shakels and a non stretch strop to give a bit of distance. |

I would recommend the Hi-Lift Jack. True, the Hi-Lift is only $70 by itself, but you'll also need chains, shackles, and other appurtenances to use the Hi-Lift as a hand winch so the total cost will be considerably more than $70. Still, you need these items anyway if you venture offroad, even if you have a winch on your truck. |

I second that approach. I have winched with the Hi-Lift several times and it hasn't missed a beat. It is easier with the Jack Mate, since you can adjust the chain very easily... |

I'll vote for the HiLift as well. I keep a bow shackle on the top hole and some chain and towstraps in the back. When venturing off-road I carry a winch anchor of some kind. You need the hilift anyway, and you need the chain and straps anyway, so its a relative bargain. And winches do fail occasionally, and this low tech solution might prove a worth backup. -P |

Black rat 3500 lb hand winch doubled over will give you about 50 feet of pull before you need to re-adjust. Its huge cable gives a sense of stability and confidence, and you can winch out of a long mud hole quite quickly and easily. But its about $300 + shackles dean |

http://www.wyeth-scott.com/ the more power puller, about 120 plus some extra cable or chain, some shackles and straps. a complete kit should be in the low 200's. think of it as a come-along on roids. |

Tirfoir also make a model like the black rat, I pulled a disco 2 owned by one Adam White ( where are you Adam??) out of a huge hole and it was pretty durn easy using the tirfoir, it pulls on both strokes ( back and forth for you ladies not used to stroking) and the cable is THICK. no solenoids or other stuff incase you are not as tech minded as others - and you don't need a super bumper just some Jate rings on the front frame or a bumper ring on the back. Highlifts suck for more than 1 or 3 feet of winching |

Very good point on the distance factor using a highlift. I am in the middle of considering an alternative to e-winch. I would appreciate any other experiences others have had using these $250-350 range hand winches versus a highlift jack? |

Where can you buy the Black Rat and has anyone here actually used it? Jason |

I have used it a couple of times to get myself unstuck. You gotta imagine - its a 7/16 steel cable, and there are safety stress-braking bars inside the handle that will break before anything else. The cable is engineered to be grabbed on the outside rather than wound over a drum like on a normal winch - hence its relatively thick size compared to an electric winch. In other words, you ain't gotta worry about the cable breaking Even when I get an electric (or PTO) winch I will always keep the black rat in the back - it will always work no matter what happens to the other one up front. There are times when a 3 foot pull using a high lift jack will not be too useful - imagine having to secure a rover half way out of a mud hole and resetting the jack? JMHO Dean Ps Axel may have a shot of it in use from the last trip to the barrens |
