I think I've seen something like this on these pages so I won't claim the idea but anyway, here's what I did for anybody who's interested (pctures posted on gallery under Chris Urquieta):

I have an 01' DII.

1. Cut both rear quarter panels along top of trim piece from wheel well to bumper.

2. Cut bottom "flare" of bumper off which took about 4" off the bottom of the bumper.

3. Cut back of wheel well shield even with q-panel cut. A small angle cut is required to go around the bracket that supports the wheel well shield. Cutting the wheel well shield removes the q-panel support. (solution- next step)

4. To support the q-panel, I fabricated two 90 degree brackets out of the scrap wheel well metal and secured the q-panel to the wheel well shield with these brackets.

5. Used a 3.5" hole saw to cut a hole in the q-panel for the exhaust. (In retrospect, I would have used a 4.5" hole saw but I couldn't find one.)The 3.5" hole wasn't large enough to accomodate the unexpected expansion properties of the exhaust. I did a lot of filing to accomodate this so a 4.5" hole saw would be a better choice.

6. Cut off resonator and installed new tail pipe section with the shallowest bend I could do to fit through the hole.

7. I lined the cut edges of the exhaust hole and the q-panel with black door trim purchased for $3 at auto-zone and it is staying on.

The metal around the exhaust never gets too hot to touch and the trim is not melting. The removal of the resonator has virtually no effect on the noise level of the vehicle.

My next step will be to sandwich the q-panels with some type of protective metal to form a mini-rock slider just in case.

Well I'd say I pretty much stole my idea from him. He has some nice little sliders there I think I'll copy. I think I'll take my sliders up higher--perhaps to the little trim piece to give it some serious squish resistance.

I placed my exhaust hole quire a bit farther back then he did. I tried to minimise any exhaust flow restriction.
