Hey all-
I want to remove my factory roof rails, all of them, for a custom rack but I am not seeing an easy way to do it... Anyone ever attempted this before?? Your input is appreciated. Thanks!!

Drop the headlining. Then you'll see how easy it is

Corey, you don't even need to drop the entire thing. I recently removed mine from my '00 DII. You can get to the retaining nuts by removing the visors, handles, and overhead compartments and then prying the corners of the headliner down. It will flex enough to be able to reach the nuts with an extension. Same goes for the rear.

Hey Corey,

i may have to remove my rails soon due to "new springs soon to be installed" vs "low garage door syndrome"

do you have any pics of what you did about the holes left in the roof?

Scubaman, look in the Prepping For MAR thread in the general section. There are two shots of my roof plugs. Let me know if you need details.

The factory Adventure rack is attached to the gutters, just like the DI. If you plan on using a Yakima, or something like that, you would keep the factory rails and attach the cross bars to the factory rails.

The rack I will be using is the euro version of the Adventure rack. It's made for vehicles that do not have the factory sunroofs nor the factory rails, and sits about 5"-6" lower than the NAS spec rack. In other parts of the world, the rails are optional. Only in the US are they installed on every vehicle.

Of? I don't have the rack yet. Picking it up from David Gage at MAR.

Sounds like it will look really cute with all the other mods to your truck... Have fun

I fitted my new rack through the factory rail points. No deflection in the roof so far - even with over 600 lbs. up there at one time. Land Rover rated these points at 150 - 160 lbs. - my rack alone weighs in at a hefty 138 with expanded floor.
