The Rover(95 discovery) sounded like a freight train, so I decided to replace the manifold gaskets.

Now that I'm done with this long 6-8 hour job, I have a pretty bad exhaust leak somewhere, that I cant really find.

I replaced both passenger / driver side manifold gaskets, and both catalytic converter manifolds.

After spending $130 on parts from the stealership, I'm none too happy to have a pillow of smoke greet me on startup. It comes once the engine has warmed up (about 45 secs after start). It's white in color also.

I replaced the sparkplugs / wires / oil / oil filter as well, but I'm pretty sure its the manifold or catalytic converter that's to blame here.

Can anyone give me a suggestion on how to nail this problem? I have to leave town tonight to go back to school, and I dont feel safe driving it with smoke coming out.

Oh, by the way, the gaskets didnt help the noise. Guess it was actually a blown converter or something. $130 + time, and no positive results :(

Well. I made this post right after my brother left the house. After posting, I went outside. He backed all the bolts out, and retorqued to 35 ft-lb.

No smoke. Not really sure why retorquing them helped, but it did.

Although this seems to be working right now, this little experience has made me think of replacing the whole exhaust system. Tomorrow I'm calling a local exhaust shop to see how much they would charge to put headers -> muffler on the Rover.

Anyone else done this? What have you to say about custom exhaust?

Thanks,
Jared

hey Jared, the smoke was probably just the paper on the gaskets burning off. after a few minutes of running, the smoke will go away (just an fyi).
